I am not an expert Gimp user , or poster for that matter, so please be kind!
1) I saved the user/gimp 2.6 to my flashdrive for later
2)Uninstalled all gimp versions and deleted all user/gimp and program/gimp folders
3) Reinstalled Gimp 2.8
4) Added the "Get GIMP version (so scripts can be backwards compatible to 2.6)" from the gimp Registry - http://registry.gimp.org/node/26262
5) Copied the brush, script, etc. files from Flashdrive to User/gimp 2.8 folders (So far I have moved brushes, plug ins, scripts, gradients and fonts)
I just have the teeniest bit of a lag,but nothing like before and so far everything seems to work.

did you check if you have color management on , that was the issue I think with slow,lagging brushes .

I am not sure what colour management is yet .
Right now I am going to test plug ins. No luck with heal selection so far.

Hi. You'll find colour management in preferences. (edit/preferences if it's the same as 2.6.11)

look in preferences under color management .

Basically if you have it using a profile (monitor, printer , RBG etc ) your using color management . you can set it off or on there .

Color Management is definitely the source of the problem.
If you choose to use your monitor settings be prepared for slooooow Gimp-2.8
