I have found someone who wants to try Gimp. She runs windows 7 and I wanted to know if there is a 2.8 version from Partha with Gmic already installed? I do not know yet if she has 32 or 64 bit, but will find out. for now I'll assume the 32 bit would work on a 64 machine anyway?

lol, well then she will have to update, won't she. I just think that adding G'mic adds so much to Gimp and it would be hard for her to try and add it on her own. Having it already added would be a big bonus. So if portable is downloaded to the computer, is it used any differently than the non-portable Gimp?

No exactly the same
the only difference with Vista or 7 is that the portable may be installed everywhere EXCEPT "program files" (because the lock of 7 and vista on program files )
Any other place is good..just C, or Document or what else

The normal gimp would not suffer for the Windows lock because is split in 2 different places, and the part that would suffer the lock is not in program files but in the user directory

If instead uses XP also "program files" may be used

Just install his non portable one, do you know her ram amount?
http://partha.com/downloads/Gimp-2.8.1- ... -64bit.exe More than likly if she has anything over 4 gb of ram.
That should have GMIC installed correct? And it should work with the program files folder as it is not a portable edition. Just my 2 cents.

@PC : Note that I don't have plans to release another version of G'MIC soon, because all is working as expected right now (with the latest 1.5.1.6). I think I will wait for a longer time between each release now

(yes, I already said that in the past :hehe )

Just tell your friend to join this forum and she will be advised of updates regularly. :)
I like using Sam and Parthas portable with GMIC because it has a separate folder for my GMIC Faves file.
And i don't have to worry about installing it.

Since the portable architecture has no any disadvantage if installed on the main HD (if on external drive USB connection may slow down) but offer several advantages (i.e less risk of conflict with identical dll that may be in the computer because installed by other programs ) i can't see any reason to prefer the "standard" version
