One of my smaller dreams is to be able to recreate this album cover:

Image

I've tried it before and it's SOOO hard. The level of detail is nothing short of stupendous.

I just love to look at it and find more and more detail...

So, one day when I get amazing, I will do it!

wow, that would take tons of layers. I guess you have to start by trying to figure out each separate effect and work your way up from the bottom!

One time when I tried, I started with the borders. That alone has an insane amount of detail. It's ridiculous. But awesome.

Oh, this would be super hard. But I agree, the cover is really amazing.

mariawendt: whew! that's what i call ambition :). no reason why you shouldn't be able to make it though - it'll just take a lot of work.

its an extremely tough one

where will you get all the decoration stuff from ?
a clock, coins, medals, flowers, swirls, patterns.....

and next you would need to find the right fonts

my advice would be to make something in that style

was this even made digitally or painted by hand ?

EDIT:
have a look at this tutorial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrqDzlYPJHU

instead of the 3D text, you make flags with paths and align your text to the path, which is pretty hard to get right ( i know what im talking about *lol*)
then you add more and more decorational layers till you're happy
there are a lot of nice ornaments here:
http://www.dafont.com/search.php?q=soft+ornaments
or here:

A good vector prog like inkscape would be better than gimp. (Said in a gimp forum. break out the tar and feathers.)

Guys, what if we made a collaborative effort? Everyone puts one piece of it together? That would be pretty awesome! :D

Oh, wow, that would be awesome! But how would you go about coordinating that?

@Esper, thanks for all the links. They all look extremely useful, especially the dafont one! I would assume that the cover was made digitally, but I could be wrong.

@Erisian, I hope I have the patience, but you never know. It would definitely be a huge project!

@Gms9810, I will be the first to tar and feather you! I have yet to try Inkscape, though I really want to get started with it!

@everyone else, thanks for all the encouragement!! You guys here are the best! :hugme

great idea
we ´d probably need some rules or a frame, so it all fits together

yes and no

i think we will have to post xcf files anyway, so everybody can work on what his/her precessedor did
but what i meant is, we need a frame so there is focus
like the original user posts what kind of art he wants as an overall goal and what kind of parts everybody could contribute
or something like that

in terms of your dreamcover, somebody might do the text, somebody else has an idea for a few decorational things, another one might want to compose everything in a way he sees fit, etc

it think the important thing is, that we kind of end up with what the original goal was, not some wild mutation (which could be interesting as well)
but you know, if you post a certain piece, and i would make a starship out of it, thats not really what we wanted to achieve in the begining

GimpKnowHow's voice seems to be getting deeper. I can remember some of his earlier tutorials and he sounded like a squeaky little boy . :hehe
