this probably belongs to scripts....

is it possible to have the option of a fixed layermask ?

in GIMP a layer and its layermask are connected
if you move the layer, the mask moves as well

what i would like to have is a layermask that stays where it is, while i can move the belonging layer around as i wish

Hi Esper

I have run into this predicament myself and the closest thing I could get it to work was to select the whole canvas then hit Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V and move the floating layer. Then hit Ctrl+H to anchor it back. This is the way I move contents of layers that have masks. The shortcut keys make it a little easier.

Although you could actually choose the mask and move it then choose the layer canvas and move both back to where you want them.

Hi PegLeg,

interesting, i used the technique you described in the texture effect tutorial
http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=5774

another idea is to use a saved channel
you can edit the opacity of the mask (and the color)

so lets say you create text on a transparent layer
alpha to select the text
save the selection to a channel and then turn up the opacity of the mask to 100%
in effect this will give you a (seemingly) black layer with your text in it
