Hi everybody,
I was wondering whether some of the many good artists playing around here is willing to define and publish for release new pre-sets for Gimpressionist; having tried here and there on those available so far I didn't succeed in creating appealing results; maybe other pre-sets are already around in the gimp world but I didn't find them, if any is there.
thanks to any volunteer!

How about a rice mosaic; it was originally inspired by a T. Rowe Price commercial back then. Now I had to do some post processing for my liking. First, I desat the image, then, after GIMPressionist, I dupped then ran Dilate on the top layer and blended to taste to rid the black border around the rice kernels. I then ran plastic wrap script-fu to add a little gloss sheen. :)

It depends on what you mean by appealing results.

Gimpressionist is more like for adding some texturized look to your images. I would use it to imitate canvas textures, oil paintings, chalk, etc.
If your are looking for artistic effects, there are tons of more interesting plugins for that. Gimpressionist is age old plugin and mostly forgotten now.
Anyway, here are some additional Gimpressionist presets if case you don't have them.

You can create your own presets, if you look at the attached presets, they are just text documents with lines of commands for the plugin.
If you're able to figure out how they work, it's quite easy to make your own.
Also, you can create your own paper and brushes for Gimpressionist (GIMP allows to save images with ppm and pgm extensions).

Cheers.

The follow up...

Dinnaset, you might want to check the Gimpressionist thread I started a few months back viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5461

The possibilities there are limitless.

Thanks K1! What you said is what i tought, i.e "Gimpressionist is more like for adding some texturized look to your images. ...If your are looking for artistic effects, there are tons of more interesting plugins for that. Gimpressionist is age old plugin and mostly forgotten now."
Well, I will use it only for adding texturized look.
btw the contents of your attachment was already in my pc, anyhow thanks;
for the rest (Lyle and K1 examples of use...) I'm too lazy ... sigh!

I just played with it the first time and liked big textured strokes with variable "size" linked to "value" (brightness) .. I had a test image with strong dark/light contrast but will come back to Gimpressionist now I know what it can do.

Glad you liked the result Graechan. Used G'MIC's Local Orientation preset for the gloss this time. :)

Thanks P.C.! I downloaded your zip and comparing the content with the stuff I have on my folders related to Gimpressionist I found four pre-sets I didn't have yet
(equalizer, equalizer2, lite-brite, mosaic); I will give them a try, thanks.
All the rest including brushes and paper was already in (sigh!).

(addendum) I tried also the additional four pre-sets: again, nothing exciting for me. The problem is very likely that the title and the menu placement is misleading (at least for me): the name recalls "Gimp Impressionist style" and the menu entry is artistic. So I was expecting pre-sets like: Monet-style, Pissarro-style, Sisley-style etc. I have to say that I work on photo editing (not on fantasy pictures created by myself), so the only use of that plug-in remains applying a texture to improve a photo appearance. Anyhow, thanks to everybody for the nice contributions.

dinasset ev-iccii used gimpressionist in many of its painting styles, look for 'ev-iccii-photo-effects.scm

I'm just getting used to using gimpressionist in a script

Maybe it's my misunderstanding of your expectations, but no plugin ever can turn a photograph into Matisse, Renoir or van Gogh masterpiece. In my (not so humble) opinion, the best plugin to ever come close to this is Akvis. It's PSPI compatible and free to try.

many thanks, I had already the ev-..pre-sets but not the script; downloaded and cleaned somehow (because some of the single effects defined inside were replaced by versions updated to gimp 2.8 by the set FU-...); given a try, some effects are not bad, I'll use them.
thanks again

(to K1 "Maybe it's my misunderstanding of your expectations...")
no, you are right. So I decided to download AKVIS Artwork trial; yes, it produces many pleasant effects, even if not...Renoir or Sisley! in the sense that they do not have a predefined style; anyhow AKVIS software is very expensive (and that is the reason why I didn't try it before). May I suggest you to try (if never done so far) Mediachance Dynamic Auto Painter? There you can select a style, and - interesting - the transformation has a continuous small steps approach so that you can stop the process when you see a pleasant result...
Thanks for your comments and suggestions

There is a program close to what you want ... quite good cheap but not free, maybe offer a trial (not sure about)
