I've never been too skilled in text effects, I know a lot of people here have been.
This is an accidental effect I got playing with Ubuntu logo in Inkscape.
No doubt it's reproducible in GIMP.
What are the simplest and fewest ways to achieve exactly the same text effect in GIMP?
A couple of things to notice. Drop shadow has a halo around it. No bevel or bump script is to be used.

Image

There are some GC members I would want to call out for the challenge. No names though.
They have helped me a lot in the past and would easily recognize themselves.

Thanks a lot!!!!

The follow up.

No need for step by step explanation, just post your results here. I, with everyone else to accept the challenge, will also try to reproduce it in GIMP.

Cheers,

Edit. Here's the original image to get you started with.

Wondering how we can get reflections from a light at top left together with a drop shadow from a light at top right...

This was quite challenging, Done with copy layers, cutting, different layer modes, blurring, moving layers and needed a layer mask to finish the yellow highlight on the right. Anyway here is mine .

Ok here it is with a small halo. I refer to a slightly less saturated yellow blur around the shadow. Even on your own image I have trouble seeing the halo. I hope the halo on my image here is visible.

the halo is part of the shadow, wbool

you get it by applying a certain kind of curve on the alpha channel of your shadow

Wow! that is fantastic Wooble, great job.

Esper, I love what you did here, the colors blend in very nicely, another great job.

Isn't what you are calling the halo just the blur radius?

Used G'MIC's Local Orientation, Dupped, then followed my lylejk stencil and blended the opacity down on this layer. Then set both layer properties to Difference. That is the majority of the effect but did have to also apply smoothing to both layers. No time for a detailed tut; got to get ready for my job in a few minutes. :)

Esper you have the advantage of knowing the original construction of the image . I do not. I used an entirely different workflow to achieve almost exactly the same result. for instance the little black outlines are just a black copy of the letters offset by a few pixel and remain under the base grey letters.
The halo, I did by selecting the yellow background shrink the selection by 7 pixels, stroke the selection 2 pix wide with the same but saturated yellow, select all and blur by 6 pix. My construction took 13 layers.
