I use a small script-fu

I love the look of it. That last image is way over the top. Love it!!!

Filters > Les Chemins Colores ... The explanations are in French at the beginning of the script.

Actually, the dialogs are in English. Here's my first try at it.

An example with parameters :

dup ran G'MIC Paint then ran adaptive Edge detect on both layers setting top layer to darken. Did some selective background removal and ran Potrace on the result.

Here is an example done by transforming paths -> selections and then filling the selection with a pattern.
