is there a filter that lets me get that ripple effect you can see on the wires ?

i made this text from different bands of colour and now i want to distort it so that i looks like the wirespools

but 'Wind' only works on edges and all the other filters, including G'MIC dont seem do to the job either

Image

got this result with a combination of Spread Noise and Ripple

Here are two links to spools of copper wire, Esper. Do they have the effect you are looking for?

Is this something what you're after, Esper?

Image Image

Edit. I don't have copper gradient, so I applied a distortion on BW Crown Moulder gradient and colored it to look like copper.

Image

Displacing gradient by 20 or so along X axis.
To make a displacement map - add correlated RGB noise at 60% to the white bg and wind-distort at about 30 for Strength. I used 'Both' for Edge
in this example but don't think it really matters.

You could do RGB noise (on a grey layer), Motion Blur, De-saturate, Unsharp Mask and Darken with Curves to achieve a wire spool look.

Did have a quick play and I think the problem I'm seeing is the fact the text is flat but the spools are curved and the light/shadows created by the curve is hard to translate to the text.

K1te, you are a hero !!!! :clap

your result is pretty much was i was after, even the colours !

thank you !!

@Oregonian: thanks for your help, i wasnt really asking for copperspools, but after i read your comment in Rod's Steampunk-Copper-Effect, i had to give copper a go ;)

btw, this is what i got in the first round
its far from good and looks more like a cookie

thanks, sounds pretty complicated, i will have to gove it a try
tbh, im not really going for a spool look, but just this basic zigzag/ripple effect

i agree and it will not work with my coloured try either, despite the fact that K1te came up with a great idea for the look i was asking for
but this will be useful for other metal-texture-effect
and this is what im really after

here is Kite's spool with the copper gradient supplied in Rod's Steampunk post.
I applied the map to gradient , a small curve correction to go more reddish and a gaussian blur Horizontal 4 vertical 0. Image

I actually grabbed your image and used Change Image on it to obtain the gradient.
Results

And with a little brightness and contrast manipulation.

There is a filter 'Deformation / Ripple' in G'MIC that looks exactly the same, when parameters are finely tuned :)

Nice effect, Esper! Looks like brushed metal.
I'm gonna play around with this technique and see if i can make
various hq brushed metal textures for my 3D projects.
Edit. Just dawned on me - I can use these textures to imitate anisotropic
light scattering on distant objects where i don't need great amount of detail
instead of using expensive anisotropic shader in Blender! Cool!

@Rod Cool idea to use pixel spread!
Could be useful for my projects too.

Esper that looks terrific! It has a real metallic look to it :bigthup

Note: After using Noise>Spread i had to trim the edges a wee bit as they were roughed up.As you can see in the spread interface preview. :)
