I downloaded two leather patterns to my desktop, I named them leather-1 and leather-2.
I went to file > open as layers, then opened them both. No matter how I try it, they both open as the same one but retain the names I called them.
I then opened an image as a layer of a pengy, Well, it opened as the same color as the leather. So, I ended up with 3 layers, but all the same color.
I'll bet this is a first, I will make some screen shots to show this strange event
Below is a screen of what the layers look like. Layer #1 should be the green leather, layer-2, the brown leather, layer#3 the tri-color pengy, which turned brown when it was opened. If I turn off the bottom layers, pengy is still brown. Now, this is something very weird

pengy should be the color in this image below

Indexed color, perhaps, at the risk of stating the obvious?

Might be obvious to you, but not to me.
Anyway, thank you again ofnuts. BTW, I couldnt change them to indexed when I opened them both as layers. So I then opened one, then changed it then opened another and changed that one and it worked doing it that way, I then opened pengy and he was okay, not brown anymore.

So what was the problem, and why did changing the image mode to indexed solve this issue?

It's the other way around. The image was color-indexed, so the colors of anything you add to it are coerced into the colors already in the colormap, as set by the first image. The fix is of course to convert the image to RGB to remove the colormap.
