Okay I am a new user with Gimp 2.8 I recently used the Path Tool to cut out an image so the background wont show, I am trying to take that image and use it with another image but when I pasted my cut out image as a new layer I see a shadow of the image and nothing else, PLEASE HELP!!! One other thing, I was trying to remove the color in the image I cut out, but when I choose desaturate nothing happens... This may be unrelated but also once I cut the image out using the Path Tool a dotted moving line surrounds my cut out, is this the way it is supposed to work? is there a way to remove the dotted line I guess? As you can see I am SUPER NOVICE and getting really frustrated with my failed attempts, ALL HELP IS WELCOMED, thanks a million!

Hi Lid Law and welcome to Gimp Chat.

Using paths is a good way to create a selection,
which my be use for this purpose.

It seems as though you want to remove the background form an image,
is this correct?

Okay...

I would suggested that you export the edited image as a PNG image.
Open the background image you would like to use.
Then open the exported png image as a layer on to the background image.
Alternatively,
after exporting the edited image as a png.
You can then open both images as layers.

Try using Copy Visible (with the selection) and Paste as layer.

It sounds like when your pasting it into the new image you haven't "anchored" it to a layer. It's a floating layer, at this point. Touching the anchor icon at the bottom of your layers list, will attach it to your top layer, or click on the new layer box at the bottom of the layers list to make it a new layer of it's own.
