Gimp-2.8 only allows you to save the workspace file (XCF File).
You have to use File>Export for other extensions. :)

Welcome to Gimp Chat by the way.

File>Export doesn't let you save in any format other than PNG?

Hey Paul. I hope you get your problem solved. Most of the time when you uninstall programs, stuff gets left behind, registry items, preference files, etc.. Unless you clean that stuff out, ususually just uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't make any difference. What operating system do you use? Is it up to date? Did you download Gimp from gimp.org or install it from a repository?

I should have added that some of those leftover files may or may not get overwritten when reinstalling.

Anyway, sorry it's not working out. If you have patience, someone may come along that's had the same problem or just knows more about it.

Un install that Gimp-2.8 version from gimp.org and grab the Gimp-2.8.1 at http://partha.com/
There is a list on the left side with download links.Choose either 32 bit or 64 bit. Whichever your system requires.
I am guessing you have the same system as myself 32 bit. :).

Let me know if that works.

Are you sure you are using File>Export?
