Hi gimp users

For the Linux users !!

There is a new Gimp AppImage file.

The link for the new Appimage file.

The AppImage is working fine for me.

I have a Chromebook PC and I run Linux inside the Cromebook.

Isn't it a developer image ?

Yes it is. It's better to download v2.10.20 as that is the stable version. Even numbers=stable, odd numbers=experimental. For instance the latest v2.10.19 is exactly the same as v2.10.20. Features are added onto the experimental versions as they become available.

not really useful for me:
neither BIMP (Batch Image Manipulation) nor Bevel Reflect Logo work (probably other compiled plug-ins don't work either):

Code:
Batch Image Manipulation-Warnung: Could not execute plug-in "bimp"
(/home/xxx/Appimage/GIMP-2.10.20/GIMP_AppImage-release-2.10.20-withplugins-x86_64.AppImage.config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10/plug-ins/bimp)
because it uses an obsolete version of the plug-in protocol.

ML Bevel Reflect 2.0-Warnung: Could not execute plug-in "MLBevelReflect"
(/home/xxx/Appimage/GIMP-2.10.20/GIMP_AppImage-release-2.10.20-withplugins-x86_64.AppImage.config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10/plug-ins/MLBevelReflect)
because it uses an obsolete version of the plug-in protocol.

And snap and flatpak can't integrate GMIC-qt :-(

PPA doesn't look like providing new packages ...
So I'll have to stick to old stuff.

(PS.: I'm on Linux Mint 19.2 ... if that matters)

Something wrong there. It works perfectly here with BIMP and BRL. I'm running it in MXLinux right now, but that shouldn't matter. I'm using 2.10.20 without plugins, perhaps the one with plugins has errors? I like to add G'mic myself.

Should work, but who knows when dependencies come into play and those error messages look like a corrupt appimage file to me.

This is kubuntu 18.04 (which should be close to Mint 19) and the 2.10.20-with-plugins appimage.
ML Bevel reflect https://i.imgur.com/ZeMijFX.jpg The monster script (not shown) works as well ;)
This a BIMP 2.4 I recently compiled, Should work out-of-the-box. https://i.imgur.com/bATYnqh.jpg
I would try deleting the appimage user profile, let it make a new one.
Just in case the files attached, they might work.

And snap and flatpak can't integrate GMIC-qt :-(

Flatpak are working on it, https://github.com/flathub/org.gimp.GIMP/pull/75 Sometime QT will be integrated.

PPA doesn't look like providing new packages ...

Nothing for several weeks, seems to be stuck compiling GEGL https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulas ... le-prepare

Good news to read that occasionally flatpak might work.
No hope for the Appimage though. Redownloaded, made new dirs for personal files ... just doesn't work.
Still complains about obsolete protocol stuff.
I'm staying with my good old 2.10.12 for the time being.

Hi nelo. I notice you are using Mint 19.2. I always stick with the long term support releases. They are more stable.

This is how I install appimages on Xubuntu 20.04.
I use the Gimp appimage without plugins
First make appimage executable

Code: Select all
/downloads/./GIMP_AppImage-release-2.10.20-x86_64.App --appimage-extract

Gimp is run from the folder squashfs-root/ ./AppRun

For filters the appimage uses the hidden Gimp appimage folder user/.config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10/
Thats a reason you don't need the appimage with plugins. The G'MIC appimage can be updated separately. I agree with racer-x this is a better way of managing Gimp on Linux.

I also use Kdenlive from an installed appimage. I think appimages are cross-Linux-platform and very cool.

Something in nelo's OS preventing the appimage running, I wonder what it is.

I disagree about the with / without plugins versions, "with-plugins" includes extra library files even if you do not use the plugins and makes adding your own plugins more flexible.

However, a demo of unpacking the 2.10.20 appimage in LM 19.1 with a few tweaks - https://youtu.be/F1epWY5SYn0 FWIW 8 minutes duration.

success! :jumpclap

looks like extracting the appimage did the trick.
Thanks a lot Rich :tyspin
