Microsoft buys GitHub

Microsoft has gone 180 degrees on open source software once describing linux as a 'cancer'.
Now they are 'all in' on open source but what about the future? Software companies get taken over or even go bankrupt.

Gimp is on GitHub but because of it's design, repositories are distributed so owning it does not seem to be an advantage.

No, Gimp isn't on GitHub. Gimp is on a Gnome-owned GitLab. The first line at the top of the page you link to says:
"GIMP (this is a mirror!". And there was a mirror on Github because the previous source code server for Gimp had no feature like the ones you find in Github/Gitlab, but the mirror in Github make much less sense now.

Gimp is a lot more on GitLab. GitHub could be nuked at any time and it wouldn't change anything for Gimp devs.
