Had to pick one, so I picked samj's. Did share both links at DPR's site. Thanks samj for the compile. It works quite well. Haven't tried to install resynthesizer, user filter and a few other of my filters yet, but eventually do plan to. Just glad I can keep my old GIMP just in case I need a crutch. lol

Do have a question, though. I know that G'MIC can handle higher bit depth, but, does G'MIC translate the result to 8 bits or does it recognized the bit precision and passes the higher bit depth level result to GIMP accordingly? Just curious. I'll pose my question at Pixls' site too. :)

Hi to all.

If G'mic reduces the photo to 8 bit then who can I see it in gimp software?

Thanks
Doron

David just answered my post at pixls; it does. Just tried what he said (in my case, used G'MIC's anisotrophic smoothing) and indeed it smoothed the histogram when I checked it using GIMP Levels. Very happy about that. :)

OK; decided to include my modification of samj's interface. I know; old school old fogy I am. lolol

:)

edit: did have to reconstruct the gradient tool icon (not hard) since it was missing. :)

So far, I got Resynthesizer (the python version; 64-bit), userfilter, and shellout to work now. Still, a lot more work to be done. lol

:)

edit:

saddened that PSPI won't work in GIMP 2.10. I suppose the old plugin is just too old for GIMP now. Shellout works, but still I would like a ps compatible plugin to work in GIMP. Just wish I knew coding. lol

At least there's a work-a-round. :)

Has anyone seen how to access n-point deformation using samj's build? Just curious. :)

samj (at pixls) suggested I try PSPI in the 32-bit portable version. It does work there. Pretty happy about that. Maybe the developers will allow 32-bit GIMP plugins to work in 64-bit version in future builds, but, my gut says that won't happen. Oh well. :)

Given the support for Samj's portable version of GIMP 2.10 I thought I would give it a go and have downloaded it to a USB.

However, whilst I can start it up and it recognises my brushes, patterns, gradients etc from my user/app data source, I am unable to get the many scripts/plug-ins I use to be available. I have tried copying them to the USB in locations I found in 'preferences', but they still do not show up.

Also GMIC ... how do I make it available and accessible?

G'MIC is part of samj's build, omg. Both gtk+ and qt versions show up for me so don't understand why they don't for you. :)

OK; Ben (at pixls) showed the way to enable n-point, but doing so, I had to find the direct GIMP executable and create a batch file for it. When doing so, there were many errors that would pop up, but eventually you get to the point where you can enable n-point. When you go back to launch GIMP via the regular portable executable (to get the plugins back), n-point is no longer there. Not sure what issues keep this feature from being enabled, but I bet samj's aware of the issue. There's a way, if I really need it, to get it (and pretty much only it and after a lot of pop up errors). :)

I started posting a reply on pixls, then saw that the basics ie. the --show-playground switch had already been posted, so deleted the post.

I already put up some notes + screenshots at:

https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-The-P ... 57#pid7857

but what you should check first is your Gimp profile and the gimprc file. Even enabling the switch temporarily and a Gimp restart, will write the entries. Otherwise, add them yourself.

Thanks Rich; placing those entries in gimprc worked. I'll share that info at pixls if you haven't done so already. :)

Now, if only someone could compile PSPI for 64-bit GIMP (I can wish, can't I; lol). :)

Samj,

Thank you very much. Your portable build works fine. (And quick)

Tried once more to set up and run Samj's portable 2.10 GIMP. Got many dll error messages when starting GIMP from the USB and even with all my old plug-ins/scripts and GMIC in my user folder, had no luck whatsoever with them showing/being accessible.

Next tried loading the new GIMP 2.10 direct from GIMP.org; again it seemed to wipe out my user folder and even after I restored '.gimp-2.8' user folder from backups 2.10 would not recognise any filters.

So I restored 2.8 and everything is fine; but I feel really embarrassed that, although retired for 10 years now, my 40 ears experience working in the IT industry cannot help me to get 2.10 running

I'm running the portable version direct from Harddrive, OMG. You cannot run the GIMP executable directly; you will get errors if you do. You have to go to the higher up directory and run GIMP_EN.exe (my case that is since I am an english speaker). :)

Lyle - thanks for your help. However, another 60 minutes of trying to get the Samj version operational with all my current filters (both python and scheme) available failed miserably.

I copied the program from USB to hard disk, then ran the new GIMP, in which I modified all the folder names in preferences and restarted expecting to see all those friendly filters ... but no. GMIC was there but now I give up.

I must be missing something in the process or just do not understand exactly what is required. I will stick with GIMP 2.8.22 for a while.

OMG, do NOT change the names in Preferences, just add the links to your plug-ins folders, look:

As you see I added 3 of my folders (so far only those "ported" to 2.10, but you may add others, Gimp 2.10 runs in "compatibility" so many of the old filters even if not ported do run, but not all)

PS: the scripts should be inserted into the folder Preference/scripts, look:

I just added the few I am testing for my porting activity, you may add almost all your scripts, many will work
