For the Linux users: Gimp 2.10.7 is out and comes with G'mic 2.4.0 pre-installed. https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-ap ... 4.AppImage

This one is a smaller size and only has a few plugins pre-installed. It loads quicker than the previous versions. So far I like it...

Surprised no one has comment on this. Are there really that few Linux users? I would certainly hope not....

hi racer-x. "Are there really that few Linux users? I would certainly hope not...."
Just speaking for myself, I don't always have time to try the latest versions of gimp.
I'm trying to use Natron to make some particular video effects. Seems like 'node-based' compositors will be the big thing in graphics.

I slowly realized a forum I used to visit had become a 'digital retirement village'. A bunch of mostly old guys arguing about how to save the planet. Interestingly, they were having no impact on the real world at all.

Yeah, I already played around with Natron. Not sold on the Node-based editing workflow though. Seems more work than it's worth to me. Just give me multiple video and audio tracks with the ability to "Group" animate/process is good enough for me. Simple and sweet, that's how I like it...

I just watched an idiotically over-simplified video on natron.

They could have called 'read' import and 'write' export but they probably wanted to alienate most of their users :)

You can run AppImage in parallel with flatpak and regular Gimp install. They do not conflict with each other. The main problem with flatpac is the huge size (1 GB or more) compared to this AppImage at 120 MB. You can't really run G'mic QT in a flatpac yet. This AppImage has G'mic 2.4.0 already installed and ready to go.

Good to know that they can run in parallel...although even with just the script running right now I experience random pauses here and there. so i won't play with that just yet.

I'm using Otto PPA.
AppImage looks interesting though, on Windows I've been using portable apps (PAF) on USB stick for years to run Gimp and other apps at work on shared machines.
Does it run well from USB pen stick?

The appimage format uses a CD/DVD format "RockRidge" for storage.

When you run an appimage, it unpacks to a folder in /tmp in linux root, not from the actual appimage. So the only issue with a USB pen stick is the slower initial startup. Once up and running all depends on your system.

The only issue I have with the aferrero appimages is you tend to get what you are given. Recent versions not too bad with scripts and python plugins but compiled plugins very liable not to work, especially with the latest CentOS base (which is RedHat/Fedora)

Comes the time you need to update Gmic. Not a 8MB download any more, you need to wait for/download a whole new appimage.

Thanks for info rich. Might give it a try, don't like the fact one needs to update the whole app to get latest Gmic.

Use whatever version works for you, who cares?

On my system, Gimp 2.10.7 works very fast and is super stable. I never had any 2.10x version crash on my Linux machine. No idea what you are talking about.
