I installed Ubuntu 20.04 and it comes with Gimp 2.10.18. I don't know why but the installed Gimp has hardly any scripts or plugins. The Appimage that I dragged across from a previous partition has everything and works straight off.

Don't really need 2 Gimps but looks like the appimage in the squash-fs will be the one I use.

That's because Ubuntu 20.04 has dropped Python 2, the end of life for python 2 was January 1, 2020.
Gimp 3 will have Python 3.

Use a snap or a flatpak which has python2 support but no QT support. Caveat: some compiled plugins need dependencies installing manually.

I have been trying out kubuntu 20.04 in a VM and so far not impressed. It was not happy when I disabled automatic updates seems to like phoning home. Almost as bad as M$.

It's easy to install python2.
That doesn't fix the python scripts. Maybe you have to make python2 the default?

I miss the old crew of talent, life goes on. . The downtime has given me more time to connect with GIMP Chat and check out the new people. Oh, and AppImage is better, as far as I am concerned.

Haven't experienced problems with the scheme scripts on Ubuntu 20.04 Gimp 2.10.18, these are scripts that I've fixed manually or/and with Tim's constantize tool earlier.
Around 2 months ago when Focal Fossa was released for testing I posted about the python problem and switched back to 18.04.
Having multiple machines, I now decided to upgrade my main machine anyway and keep the crippled stock Gimp in it.
Which was good in a way, just found out measure tool has been updated with rotation.

Just want to share that on MX Linux 19.1, all you have to do is to install gimp and gimp-python from the test repos.

I'm guessing you're running flatpak since I don't see G'mic. Otto's is still stuck at 2.10.14, last I looked.

Nope, I would have mentioned if it was the flatpak.
There is a flatpak tab in MX package installer, but this is the normal Gimp in .config/GIMP/2.10 added from the MX Test Repo.
You didn't see G'mic, or any other plug-ins in the screenshot, because I had only added ofnuts' ofn-text-to-path.py to test out.
MX Linux is based on Debian Buster, so I added correct G'mic plug-in from the G'mic page, the one in MX repos is 2.8.4.

This distro really rocks.

I just tested MX linux in a live USB. I had a hunch, so I installed Gimp 2.10.18 and Python as you did, but not G'mic. I then used G'mic appimage from here: https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-pl ... continuous

I copied the gimp-gmic-QT file into the plugins folder and it worked just like I thought it would. You can see now that G'mic v2.90 is installed...

I'm glad you were testing the early release Nidhogg. I found most scripts work in the appimage but not the distro version. Whoever makes the appimages knows what they are doing.

MX Linux is trending at the top of distrowatch.com now. I started out using RedHat and Fedora years ago. Part of me always wants to go back. I have been using the Xfce desktop for a few years but that runs on everything.

Overall, Focal Fossa is pretty fast and stable so far. Also, I like the Ubuntu 'long term support' idea. Always configuring a system is not for me.

You mentioned 'Tim's constantize tool'. I missed that but it looks interesting. Where is Tim lately?
Scripts I use for animation were written by ofnuts, rich2005 and Tim. Rich2005 is a python coder but he's very humble about it

It was more of a curious experiment really. I didn't even think of getting it from G'mic website. MX Linux seems OK, but I really like my Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 x64. I may install MX on a VM to play with it a little, we'll see.

@ Nidhogg, I went ahead installed MX Linux 19.1 on my HDD (after I made a restore image of LM 19.3) and have been playing around with it. It seems OK so far, though not as smooth as LM. I've figured out how to fix most of the annoyances except the "Menu Editor". It simply is broken and won't work. I've made shortcuts on the Desktop fine, but can't make them in the Menu Editor. As you can see that the "OK" button is grayed out even though the commands work and are the same ones used in the desktop shortcuts.

Can you confirm it's not just me? Right-Click on the Start Menu button and select "Edit Applications" to enter Menu Editor.

MX has a good heritage I used Mepis from 2004 to 2010 and AntiX is always a great lightweight distro (v. good for recovery purposes)

Thanks rich2005, that did it. Apparently I needed to click "Add Category", even though I had pre-selected the category already. Oh well, learned something new.

Yeah, it was just you thanks to rich2005. AntiX is great for notebooks and old hardware, got in on old Acer AspireOne.

A little off topic here, but I've been using a cool new tool called FoxClone to create and restore images. I used it to bounce back and forth between Linux Mint 19.3 and MX linux 19.1 on my SSD. It can create or restore an image in 4 min or less in my testing. It includes useful tools like Gparted. I like it and it's much easier to use than Clonezilla.
