Way back in 1995 Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball started Gimp.

Pretty amazing for software made by volunteers and extended by volunteers in all kinds of ways.
Another 25 years?

Started using GIMP in 2001; hard to believe this gems that old now. Gets better and better as well. :)

I've only been using Gimp for a few years, but am very impressed by it's abilities.
