I had Partha 2.8.1 installed and uninstalled it through windows program files , installed new 2.8.6 (both were 64bit) .
Install worked fine and seemed to run good .
I was working on a old Xcf image and started working on it , all was good till I wanted to save . tried save, save as , export etc and got a error saying the path of image didn't have permission .
I rebooted and think that is ok but have another issue with file association , by accident I linked xcf to another program .
So i try the Open-with option . browse to gimp dir, pick gimp2.8.exe but it does not link it . It doesn't add gimp to list .
I don't see file association options in gimp .
Anyone know whats wrong , never had this problem before .
Edit: I think I fixed it .
I was trying to add the gimp-2.8.exe and I guess for some reason it doesn't like it but linking the gimp.exe worked and seems to run with it ok . not sure what the difference between them .
Hi Ed,
There is no difference between gimp.exe and gimp-2.8.exe. gime.exe is there because on a Linux system (or Unix/Mac in general), you can softlink a file to another. Since there is no such thing as softlink on windows, gimp.exe is created as a copy of gimp-2.8.exe. So, you should not have any difficulty linking to gimp-2.8.exe or gimp.exe.
My guess is that in the past you associated gimp-2.8.exe (from 2.8.1) with your graphics/image files and those associations are still in your registry. So, remove all the old associations from the registry and you will be able to link to gimp-2.8.exe again.
Let me know if this does not work for you.
Thanks,
Partha
Hi Partha .
I think I found all issues and will post .
The first one with file permission to saved was fixed by setting the gimp-2.8.exe to administration under properties , that fixed that .
Now with file associations , I ran Ccleaner and found old enteries to app open command with 2.8.1 .
so I uninstalled 2.8.6 and cleared all gimp entries to be sure .
then reinstalled and that cleared up problem of adding the gimp-2.8.exe to file association .
So all fixed now I think .
