No Windows Binaries yet. What caught my eye is the new 1024X1024 clipboard brush size (limit was, of course 512X512). Cool stuff. :)

It looks like they have some really nice fixes in it. Fedora updated gimp to 2.8.4-5 so we no longer have gimp shutting down when we change a gradient in a script.

Rod, I saw that in the list too, but I'm not sure what it is?

Frankly speaking, i don't see any significant change or bug fixes (never mind a new feature) in the change-log to promote current version to
2.8.6.

Bug fixes like that in Blender reflect in daily builds and don't invoke higher version numbers, otherwise we might have had Blender version 3000 instead of 2.67. Should be like this: x.xx RC (Release candidate for end-users testing and bug reports), then new version x.xx, and then version x.xx 'B' for stable releases. And downloadable daily builds with bug fixes, not just source files from git repository. They don't even have to build daily versions for that - build-bots do all the work for the devs who just submit fixes to the trunk. But that's Blender, not GIMP.

Sometimes, new releases introduce new bugs, as we saw in 2.8.4 with the Script-fu gradient selection bug.

Exactly my thoughts, GnuTux, thank you. We've seen that in 2.8.0 and 2.8.2 too. Old bugs are fixed but the new ones arise.

At times, it can be a trade off between new features/bug fixes in the new release, verses new bugs being introduced. The script-fu gradient select in 2.8.4 was a biggie.

I'm currently using 2.8.4-5 (which is the 5th maintenance release of 2.8.4 in Fedora Linux) and it seems pretty stable. There are a few bugs I've noticed but no major showstoppers.

At times, there seems to be strange darkening behavior when using certain color filters. I'm not sure what's up with that.

Does this mean I no longer need to include 'Active Gradient' as a gradient choice for scripts?

When I switched from 2.8.0 to 2.8.2 i got smashed by 2 new bugs right off the bat. Rare case but anyways.
At least new (back then) 2.8.2 represented new features and new release bugs were something i could live with or work around. I never do
color corrections or layers blend modes in GIMP because they are incorrect (they will be with gegl's linear color transformation), and gradient tool
is the main showstopper in GIMP. Grad tool is just annoyingly awful.

They don't. But there is a problem. There are too few (I think, one) developers for windows.
Gimp is written in C, but with typically linux libraries (GLib, GTK+, etc.).
Feel free to participate. I try to fix bugs and try to enhance the windows version, but I am no
programmer, and I reach the limit of my knowledge very fast.

I have always an eye on the git source and from time to time I make a new unofficial version.
That is, what the developers do. They decide, that the changes are worth a new official version,
so they do. So, windows user, if you used my unofficial version before, you will not see many changes
in gimp-2.8.6. Right after the release, the developers switched the git version to 2.8.7, so my new
unofficial version will be gimp-2.8.7.

Very appreciative of what you do Onkel. It's true that Windows versions get ignored
(although, they say they got no developers for Windows, the latter combine 90% of gimp users, weird isn't it?).
