GIMP Version: 2.6.10
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 7
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hi everyone!

I'm very new to this forum but been lurking and learning for awhile.

I was using GIMP 2.6.11 until two days ago when it just froze and stopped working. I learned that it was not compatible with Windows 7 so I uninstalled that and downloaded 2.6.10.

Now all my scripts and brushes are gone. I never had Python Fu but understand that it should have come with the 2.6.10, but it's not there either.

What I got is the basic GIMP with minimal brushes and the basic scripts.

I tried deleting all the files and downloading all the brushes and scripts again but they are still not there. The scripts are not in any other menu either.

When I check my Program Files>GIMP>share>gimp 2.0>brushes, the brushes are listed.
User>GIMP>scripts- the scripts are listed.

2.6.10 is just not recognizing them.

Does this mean that I can only use GIMP for just the very basic stuff? Or do I need to change my OS?

Non-techie here, so please talk to me like you're talking to a 5 year old. :)

Thanks in advance.

Who told you 2.6.11 wasn't compatible with Windows 7? The 64 bit version isn't stable for Windows, but the 32 bit version of GIMP works reasonably well.

Anytime you uninstall GIMP and you have placed all your scripts, plug-ins, and add-ons in the global folders for GIMP (located in Program Files), you'll lose them when you uninstall/reinstall. Any script, plug-in, add-on is best placed in the single user folders at C:\Users\username\.gimp-2.6\ for this reason.

I'd strongly recommend reinstalling 2.6.11 and trying again. But totally remove (uninstall) 2.6.10 from your computer before doing so.

I read that on several forums. How do I tell what version of GIMP I'm downloading? When I go the the download site, there is only a download button.

Yes, that is where I have them, but it's not showing up in GIMP

Okay, I will try that when I get home. I did have 2.6.11 prior but it kept freezing up and I had to keep forcing a computer shut down to get out of it.

Thanks for your tips!

I believe the download button on gimp.org is the 32 bit installation. I was just asking, because there can be confusion when one doesn't have all the facts (which version you downloaded, etc). But I have GIMP 2.6.11 working on my Win 7 (it has its *glitchy moments, but it does work to a degree - plus I would constantly save my work when using it).

* Tends to freeze after a few hours of use, and will not work with PSPI (PSPI worked in 2.6.10)

Also, did you check to see if Edit - Preferences - Folders had those folders checked and activated? They should be working via default, but never hurts to check.

Yes the download button should DL gimp 2.6.11 at 32bit

Luckily because there there is only a experimental version of gimp at 64 bit , that in my opinion should be called "broken" not "experimental" (and would be even better if removed )

What is important is delete the .gimp folder in your user profile (if you added something there backup the files first)

In case you don't know how to find that folder...i feel lazy so i will just suggest a cool and free program that will do for you
may be useful also if you know how to, to really unistall other programs that left behind tons of dangrous staff.

So just get REVOUNISTALLER the free version will suffice, and is very simple to use

Then just reinstall gimp

PS Python should be added search in this forum how to (sorry i feel so lazy )

I don't understand why the files will not work though.Even if they are in the Gimp Program directory structure they should still fire.IF they are in the correct folders, and in the correct state...ie...not zipped or something.
Python is a whole other issue. You need the Python-Fu package and instructions on install from GimpTricks on YouTube Just search GimpTricks on the Youtube site and find her video on adding Python-Fu to Gimp.Excellent tutorial.

Because a commune error when trying to add new path in preferences/folder/brush or plugin or whatelse is forget to click the new folder icon

then instead then add paths the default path are replaced...and brush, filter and so on went MIA

That or the file controlling preferences went corrupted ( very improbable )

or more probable he installed that experimental 64bit gimp thinking more adapt to 7 that works at 64 bit
Too bad that the poor 64 bit build as experiment was far to be successful

The left over of that build (in its .gimp folder) may create the problem

i didn't say to just run revounistaller to delete all gimp left over and reinstall gimp ?

It's working again!

Thanks mahvin! I uninstalled and re-installed 7 times and now the original version is working. Whew!

I just hope it does not freeze up like the last time when I had to force a shut-down.

Mahalo, again!

Okay, 2.6.11 has stopped working again.

I get this error message:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

And then the program just shuts down. I can run 2.6.10 but it does not recognize any scripts or brushes even if I re-download them.

Am I doomed? :(

You could try upgrading your Visual C++ Runtime Library, as one option.

The only other ideas I have is you may have a program/plug-in that's incompatible with GIMP via the Runtime Library.

I have no idea how to do that.

When I go to Control Panel>uninstall programs, it lists 15 Visual C ++ items. They are all either 2005 or 2008.

Should I uninstall all of them and install the 2010?

Wow. 15 items? Try upgrading before uninstalling anything.

Gimp has nothing to do with Visual C++ Runtime BUT that message pop out often in case of weird problems

A QUICK AND SAFE WAY TO SOLVE THOSE WEIRD PROBLEM:

grab THIS version of Gimp 2.6.11 and install it on the main HD
http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_p ... p_portable

Yes is ALSO portable and works perfectly if installed on the main HD, no disadvantages

I should have told before to avoid you to install/unistall so much times

just try once again BUT with that version and let me know !

Lorri that is exactly the same file he already installed and unistalled dozens of times, the server is different but the installer is the same..that will help only to make him freak out for frustration :gaah ..not to be rude but since you never had similar problems you can not help in a similar case

Instead THIS version of Gimp http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_p ... p_portable (there Click "Download Gimp_26-11) will magically solve (well solve 99% of the weird cases )

Thanks for all your advice!

It seems that GIMP was crashing due to my brushes (???) I had about 12 sets and it was freaking out. Just loading the brushes was taking up over 4 GB of memory. Is this normal?

Anyway, I solved that problem by removing all my brushes (except default) and it works like a dream. I put back just four of the ones I use all the time and so far, so good.

I just wish I could have more brushes at my disposal.....

The only time I had crashes with brushes is when I installed some of the PS ones and they were so huge that everything froze up. After I deleted them, everything was fine, so maybe that was the same thing that happened to you.

you may try to add a feweach time you go to open gimp

Maybe the problem is not the quantity but something wrong with 1 of that brushes
