GIMP Version: 2.8.22
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 7
GIMP Experience: New User
List any ERROR messages you received:something to the effect of:
file type unknown
I haven't used a jpg for about 10 days...
Downloaded Gimp 2.8.22 installer version from
https://www.gimp.org/downloads/Ran and it installed and runs, but when I tried to drop a jpg it gave filetype error,
When I file-open it doesn't display any .jpg files in directory listing.
As I said above, haven't used a jpg for a while, so am not blaming 2.8.22 install---
I tried reinstall of 2.8.22, same issue.
Maybe a supporting file has been corrupted?
I will download 2.8.16 today and install it when I get home later,
Does anyone have further suggestions?

1) Go to Edit>Preference>Folders>Plugins this lists two folders, one if in your directories, on is in the system's. Navigate to that one and check that it contains a bunch of file-something files (file-jpeg, file-png, file-gif... ) (if you are mmissing these ones you won't be able to open PNG or GIFs either)
2) If you find these files, locate your
Gimp profile. It contains (among others) a file called pluginrc. You can open it with a plain text editor. Does it contain references to the file-* files you found in 1)?

Ofnuts,
Off the top of my head, I seem remember not seeing the file-jpg (or jpeg) but png & gif were there.
I will follow your instructions and give an accurate report tomorrow.
Thank you!
Dinasset, when I installed 2.8.22, it probably just overwrote 2.8.16 where the problem may have been.
I don't know exactly how to do a clean install, so just installed via defaults..

I had time to go home for lunch, a rare treat.
>>1) Go to Edit>Preference>Folders>Plugins this lists two folders, one if in your directories, on is in the system's.
Only shows one
D:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\plugins
there is the equivalent on drive C: though it only contained one file libint8.exe (or similar)
>> Navigate to that one and check that it contains a bunch of file-something files (file-jpeg, file-png, file-gif... ) (if you are missing these ones you won't be able to open PNG or GIFs either)
a long list but the important area
from file-i to file-m appears to be missing the suspect file-jpeg* or file-jpg*
I searched c: & d: it was not found. didn't search e: - i: as they shouldn't be there.
file-ico.exe
file-jp2-load.exe
file-mng.exe
>> 2) If you find these files, locate your Gimp profile. It contains (among others) a file called pluginrc. You can open it with a plain text editor. Does it contain references to the file-* files you found in 1)?
C:\Users\BA\.gimp-2.8\pluginrc
searched as file-j*
did not find a reference
only these 2
(plug-in-def "D:\\Program Files\\GIMP 2\\share\\gimp\\2.0\\plugins\\file-jp2-load.exe"
(proc-def "file-jxr-load" 1
Could I rename or move file or folders before another install?
so 2.8.22 could install clean, then perhaps it would install the missing file...
Thank you for your help!

So you installed Gimp on D:?
The fact that you are missing only some is a bit surprising... If you have an antivirus, can you check if it quarantined the file due to a false positive?
Thu Jul 13, 2017 5:01 pm
Windows defender, no internet -
normally I would receive a warning if it was
quarantining a file, none appeared. I will look.
I ran the install, don't remember selecting D:
the previous install was to c:, but to save space on c:
many of the directories have been moved to d: - was trouble free
for over a year. I thought that it installed following
something in a preference or setup file of some type.
h: or i: are faster and more free space then the others.
I suppose I will move the existing load and experiment,
with the idea of loading on h: just to see what
happens, if it gives me a choice.

No files were in quarantine.
After renaming and moving folders, the reinstall worked.
It still installed main files to C: and
'data' files to D: and again I did not choose that for a selection,
so some preference file have still been present.
I moved that 'data' folder from D: to H: and
updated in preferences the locations.
Everything is working again, did not have to reinstall
gmic or any other package (that I am aware of yet).
Only one thing lost
In the tool box, to the right of FG/BG color
on the Brush, Pattern, Gradient cluster...
before where it shows the Brush, I had
a 'clipboard' that could be used to make brushes.
Now it only seems to display the brush, but never
the 'clipboard' ??
Thanks for the help!

I don't remember seeing a clipboard viewer in the Toolbox. The viewers for the brush/pattern will show the clipboard content if the current brush/pattern is set to "clpboard".

Thank you Ofnuts!
Sorry for my poor description.
It was in the brush, pattern, gradient combo
I must have set it accidently at some point
early on a year ago, and thought it was a standard.
