Images importing in black and white?

I am new to using GIMP and have been following some tutorials on YouTube, but I have run in to an issue and do not know what is causing this. Every time that I try to import a .png file it is coming up black and white and does not have the colors that I created it as in Inkscape.

Does anyone know how what I am doing wrong? Also I don't know how to post a screen shot can someone help me with that?

Make sure your image settings is set to color and not black/white or Indexed before you import your image into the layer you are working with.

Hello. I'm having the same issue with my color images importing as black and white images when I "import as layer" and I do not know how to change the image settings to color. Can you please explain the steps? Thank you!

make sure your image mode is select to RGB - it should be by default but sounds like you may have changed it.
