Clipping groups

Hello. I am a new user to GIMP, just recently switched from Medibang Paint. I have a question regarding GIMP. Is there any group layer that functions like Medibang's clipping layer? I want to shade artwork with hue-shifting, as GIMP's Dodge and Burn tool just simply darkens/lightens it. The only easy method I'm aware of is using clipping groups.

I have never used Medibang. Maybe other's here have - can you explain what the function 'clipping layer' does, for those of us who haven't? Then maybe we can answer your question.

There's a page from Medibang Paint talking about this. I'm looking for a way to do this in GIMP. I can't sadly post a link to it because I'm new here.

Gimp has layer groups and group layer masks, but no clipping masks.
What sallyanne linked to is a workaround but no real clipping mask.

What any of this has to do with shading and colour rotation is beyond me.
You can do shading/highlighting on a seperate layer and colour rotation is just a technique to pick colours.

If you want to clip your shading/highlight to a shape, the only way to do that is by using a layermask or work inside a selection.

According to their website, "The clipping function references the layer below and makes it possible to color or draw only on the marked sections of that layer."

Essentially, it works in a layer group, and prevents the layer on top to be going outside of the layer below.

Yes, thats basically a group layermask in Gimp.

Idk, i guess if you are into painting there are better options than Gimp (Krita, Affinity Designer perhaps).
