Selection tools aren't working

Hi there

I am a complete newbie with limited knowledge and skill and just transferred over to mac, so this is all very new. I've downloaded gimp to make thumbnails for our YouTube channel.

I exported a scene from iMovie as a .jpg, opened that in gimp and I am trying to use the foreground select tool to cut out a person from the background. I do all the steps of selecting the person, drawing in foreground and background. But when I hit enter, nothing is selected - no marching ants. I checked the other selection tools, and it does the same thing - draws selection area, hit enter and nothing is selected.

I'm using a magic trackpad rather than a mouse.

I'm sure it is something really obvious but hours of YouTube tutorials have revealed nothing. Any help gratefully received.
