Gradient not smooth - noob question

Fri Feb 05, 2021 8:33 am

GIMP Version: 2.10.22
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Windows 10
GIMP Experience: New User

Long time PShop user moving over to GIMP here...

I am just wanting to have a gentle fade of my image to white (banner of a letter) so I put a FG-BG (Wh-Blk) gradient in a layer mask. But the linear gradient doesn't seem so linear. If you look at the screencap below, the left fade looks okay, but on the dark part of the rock on the right the fade is very sharp at the top. Something I am doing wrong ?

Thanks for any help !

Try switching the layer modes from Default to Legacy before making your gradient.

IMHO more a matter of visual contrast, there is a dark patch on the left where the gradient appears as sharp as it is on the right.

You can always adjust the gradient on the mask using the Levels/Curves and get the gradient exactly as you want it. See the initial gradient as marking the position, and then Curves/Level has defining the mapping between position and opacity.
