Layers

GIMP Version:
Operating System: Mac OS
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

I am new to gimp. I am taking a class. I have made several images with multiple layers. In the first images, the bottom layer was larger than the next layers, a cropped photo. Now with this image creation, every time I add another layer with a different size, the underlayer resizes to the smaller size of the upper layer. I tried to unlink them even though they were not linked. I have also tried to resize one of the layers and they resize together. I cannot find an answer to my problem. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Increase the size of the canvas.

A lot of people find it hard to understand layers at first. Gimp users almost always work with layers of the same size. If not then open another instance of Gimp and make your next layer the same size as the original layer.

There are ways of moving layers between canvasses, and as Blighty says you can make your canvas the same size as the layers or make the layers the same size as the canvass.

Eventually layers becomes second nature and you will work with them easily.
