Do you mean in the middle of doing something? (can't help you there)
Once a picture is exported or saved and closed, when it is reopened you will not have any history.

Maybe if you let people know what you were doing so they can try and repeat the error

Perhaps you run a plugin or script prior to losing the history?

Some filter(s) will remove image history.
Once the filter has been run.
This could have left the image with no history,
or option to undo the filter's effect.

They don't... What they can do is mess terribly with the undo stack so that after they exit, Gimp is unable to get things straight again. These filters should be fixed by their authors.

I would advise to have this dock always open/in your tabs
Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Undo History
If it happens again, you might want to have a look at this dock to see if all the history has disappeared or what's left inside.
But most important try to recall/reproduce the steps of what you did before your history problem.

Yeah, i had been working on several things, deep into it, right braining, working on 5 hours of sleep.. forgot to even finish my one cup of coffee. When boom in my face, no history. lol.

I had been using filters, and one of them went belly up and said it failed at something.. i dont rem now, and i suppose thats what did it. i could put the undo up on my other screen out of the way, er from working screen,
