How to crop an image and canvas together?

Sat Mar 26, 2022 4:12 pm

GIMP Version: 2.10.30
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: manjaro
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

In GIMP 2.8 and lower, I would click the Crop tool, make a selection, adjust, and click within the selection; The image and canvas would be cropped. The text at the bottom of the GIMP window still says, "Click or press Enter to crop".

In GIMP 2.10, when I click the crop selection, the canvas remains the same size, so I need to go to the Layers dockable dialog, right-click the layer, and select Layer to Image Size.

I do not see an option on the Crop tools dockable dialog to change the behavior. Reading the manual, I see Crop Selection and Crop Content.

I'd like to go back to one step (2.8) if possible, instead of the two step (2.10). How does a user crop an image and canvas together?

I'm not sure what you're doing. When I want to crop an image, I use the selection tool, then Right-Click and choose Image > Crop to Selection. It works as it should.

If you use the Crop tool, after you make the selection you have to double click inside the selection or press Enter. Then right click the layer in the Layer's dialog and select "Alpha to selectin".

Usually if you crop the base image it crops everything with it
Also, depending on your theme (mine is dark) It could be different shades of grey, white or anything if you made one yourself.

You cannot crop the canvas, only the background/image or layers

This is because you crop the layer only

Although "Delete cropped pixel" is not mandatory, I have it always checked because if I crop, it's because I don't need them anymore and when using a map they might interfere (I did not try though), anyway with this setting it will have the behavior that you would expect.

You have to set the "Delete cropped" pixels option of the crop tool to achieve the 2.8 behavior.
