Have you checked that there are no active selections still present?
The shortcut for deselecting in GIMP is Shift + Ctrl + A.
On a Mac the Command + Shift + A keyboard shortcut will deselect.
You can also access it from the Menu bar by going to Select and clicking None.

Maybe the mode of your png is not RGB.

Gimp had another software update, and once I updated it, the problem was resolved
