Brushes - edit via brush editor?

Sat Oct 09, 2010 9:39 pm

Sometimes I have a short term memory problem due to a stroke in 1994 and sometimes like now it gives me a fit so I need to ask a question that I normally know the answer to. When I make a brush and try to edit it via the brush editor it says read only. I thought I just had to make the brushes folder writable but that doesn't work so I must be wrong. What do I need to do to make it editable?

Sorry I have to ask this noob question and it's very embarrassing to me.

Hi Gms9810, well in your way you have taught me something about the brush editor. I checked brushes in the brushes dialog with the editor and they are all Read-Only, even ones I made. I don't think I've ever tried to edit a brush from the editor and, logically, you should be able to, but you can't.

This is what the Gimp Manual says about the brush editor.
The Brush Editor allows you either to view the brush parameters of a brush supplied by GIMP, and you can't change them, or to create a custom brush from a geometrical shape, a circle, a square, a diamond.

Instead, open the Brushes dialog by pressing Ctrl + Shift + B on your keyboard. Right-click the brush you want to edit and choose Open Brush as Image. Then you can edit it.

There, now we've both learned. :hi5

I've never used the brush editor. I just open the brush as I would an xcf file, and re-save it with a new name. Then if/when I screw it up, my original brush is fine.

check the little icons in the bottom of the brush dialog 1 is copy brush

Only copy of build in brushes may be edited with the brush editor ,not the original

Yeah; like PM, I click on the brush in the brush viewer, right-click on the brush and choose open as image. I never played with the brush vector property dialogue (circle, square, diamond and such). :)

I'll probably edit it that way. It annoys me when I can't remember things that are very basic. I've seen tuts on yorube that actually used the brush editor but it doesn't work for me, I wanted to rotate one. Thanks

I try again to explain is very simple:

open the brush selector thingy (as example clicking on the icon of the active brush..see image)

then look to the lower right corner of the new dialog, the brush icon correspond to "create a new brush"
