wordart and effects

Sat May 04, 2013 11:08 am

GIMP Version: 2.8
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Ello all. One fast question. In photoshop, they have this option within the text editer to add bevels, strokes, fills, shadows at an angle, glow and texture to the text. In gimp 2.8 i dont see options like that. Where are they located? Also, i have been using word art from libre office and microsoft but i want to make some in gimp so i can save as images to use in scribus. Thanks

there is a script called layerfx, which does what you are looking for
you can find it here:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/186

you can also do all of this stuff by hand and i made a blog with tutorials here:

There is a Word Art python extension available from http://registry.gimp.org/node/24974
Layerfx python or scm are available here.

Awesome thanks. Ill try them out and see if i can get tjem to work

there are a few problems with layerfx

i usually recommend the python version over the scm, because it has a preview which you will need, imo
but sometimes the script will eat your history
then its gone and you cant undo anything
so my advice is to save often

also the 2.8 version makes use of layergroups which may be a good thing, but unfortunately it somehow kills what modes should do
so sometimes effects are gone, but once you drag the layer out of the groupfolder everything is like its supposed to be

it may be a good idea to use the older version of layerfx, because that one doesnt make use of layergroups

Dang. I dont know which version i have. It turns out that about 6 months ago i installed some plugins. I find the layer effects under a tab called scriptfu, then layer efects. I thought those were python scripts? I know i installed python and some scripts but i forget which ones. If i had the python version, how would i activate the layer efects in gimp? Thanks

I have heard that python fu is better than script fu. If so, can i jave both scriptfu and python fu installed? Or does one have to be uninstalled?

LT72884: Look under Layer > Layer Effects. If you installed the .py version it will be there.

You can have both versions (Layer>Layer Effects and Script-fu>Layer Effects) at the same time. I can't say which is better, but the .py has preview (which you really need). However, as Esper said earlier you sometimes have to drag layers out of the layer group to get the effect with the .py version.

I have had both and I find them equally as good but I do not like the way the py puts the layers into layer groups, I find it very confusing when they do that.

Thanks guys. Just tryin to make life easier is all. Scribus does not have cool text options and what not. Between powerpoint and scribus, powerpoint seems the best for single page options. Though scribus is easy to use and i have made some cool stuff in it. Anyway im using gimp word art and effects for titles in scribus. Any more word out scripts i should know of?

Thanks

I use only Layerfx.py NOT Layerfx-2.8.py
In fact if i use a dependent effect in writing a script it's always Layerfx.py parameters.

do you know why there is this blend-mode problem with layerfolders, Rod ?

is it rooted in the python script or in the layerfolders programming ?

CRAP. i grabbed layerfx.2.8.py

is that bad?

whats the diff between the two
Also the word art plugin does not register. i placed it in same place as the layerfx.py file and restarted gimp2.8.

b&p_word_art and layerfx.py both go into your plug-ins folder

It is not bad it just doesn't work with modes at all because Gimp layer groups do not except layer modes yet..They are basically the same script.I prefer Layerfx.py because it works better with the scripts i write.Mostly it has to be your choice though. :bigthup ;)

It is Gimp.
Gimp layer groups do not except layer modes. It is something many folks wanted in the Gimp-2.8 release but because of GEGL porting i think it never will be.GEGL is the new road map for Gimp. ;)

Menu location for Word Art is <Image>/Filters/Render/Word Art

Its not under that location or under filters/render/word art. I have no idea where it is at. Haha. The .py file is in the plugins folder. Haha

I was interested in trying this after seeing this thread...thought it looked like a fun plug-in.

BUT, it will NOT show up...period. I tried it in every plug-in folder I have with reboots, directing toward in Preferences, and trying to find it in the python console, which it will not show up there.

I see it say it is loading on start up...but it is not there in filters>render>
It is not anywhere.

Make sure you have the correct version. There is one for Gimp-2.6 (version 1.0), and 1 for Gimp-2.7 (version 1.2), and up.
Here is mine. This one is for Gimp-2.7 and Gimp-2.8 versions.
I changed the menu listing to Filters>Word Art>Word Art
