I would like to make some stained glass with a ripply texture to it. Similar, but it doesn't have to be exactly like the rippled glass in this image.

This is what I have so far. I would like a more shiny, glassy look. Any suggestions?

Image

These are the notes I took as I worked with the idea.

New image filled with Gray = c1c1c1. G'MIC > Artistic > Whirl drawing Amplitude 100.

Color to alpha on the results to get rid of white.

Layer Effects > Bevel & Emboss > Inner Bevel, Depth = 5, Down, Size = 5, all other settings default.

Whirl drawing results turned off and only the highlight and shadow (masked) layers left on.

Masks applied

New layer, move to bottom, fill with white. Top and bottom of white layer ... random large areas across image in black.

Noise > Spread > Both settings 214.

Gaussian blur 5, 5 to soften the spread.

New layer above the bottom white and black layer: Blend tool, medium to light blue diagonal. Color to alpha (white).

I scaled the black and white layer here to show what it looked like before Noise, Spread and Gaussian blur.
Image

I've attached the xcf file so you can see the layers.

Just had another thought. I could try lylejk stencil on it and get a more regular pattern. Then bevel and emboss on that ... back to the drawing board :scram

I was going to suggest that, (Lyle's stencil or use the Maze pattern and bump mapped it).

That gave me a little more shine. I need to make the "islands" larger so they're closer together. I'll give the maze pattern a try, mahvin, too. Maybe a bit of blur on the beveling.

Maybe slightly reduce the bump, so that it becomes more refractive? Also, add some ambience, to lighten the dark edges.

Not having very good luck with reducing the bump. Need smaller islands closer together.

Not perfect, but with the right color combination, it could work.

I thought there was a plugin for that? I'll look for it.

I went back to the xcf image up there, played around with a background image (picture of house > threshold > spread & blurring).

Tried it without the black shadow layer from b & e and it seems to be working for me.

Thanks everyone for your input.

@ Mike, both of yours look really good. I really like that bottom one.

@ mahvin, yours gave me the idea about removing the black shadow layer from b & e.

Try using the sinus filter (Filters->Render->Pattern->Sinus) with random seeds on a few layers set to difference blend mode, then New from visible, threshold and blur.

This makes a nice bump map:

Wow, Rob, that makes a beautiful patterned glass style. Back, again, to my drawing board. Thanks!

BTW, a friend asked me to make the glass. I'm learning a lot in the process. I intend to send a link to this thread to her so she can see what all went on. :gimp

Tried your method, RobA. I still need to work with the bump map plus need to work with the bump map filter to get the light part whiter but I think it will work. I'm having too much fun at this I think.

I cropped it a lot. Just wanted to show small areas.

@O,
Did you try the plasti-wrap filter? I used it to make the ice-type shiny reflections on my avatar.

There is great need for a sarcasm font.
Absolutely for sure. We need to get those fontographers on the ball there.

No, never thought of the plasti-wrap filter. More drawing board stuff. Thanks, Bob. :bigthup

I'm sticking with Maze pattern in Render. If you like this result, I'll explain how I did it. If not, no worries...

Bob: I've been working on the Sarcasm font, for real. I am now on the letter K.

O,
I guess it depends on the exact look you & your friend are trying to achieve. The window in my bathroom actually has a plastic layer that is etched in a very fine diamond pattern; although you cannot see in or out, at night when the moon shines in (bathroom, moon, get it? :rofl ) the moon looks sort of like if you had used a camera with an extreme star filter.

This attempt started with a 512x512p white square. I ran maze then oilify, then GMIC cubism and GMIC spread noise, and ended with colorize.

In this one, I cheated, using a glass texture from CG Textures (link = http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?i ... 4d52b3cea8 )
Image

This is the same glass texture, but I bump mapped it twice, once inverted, again not inverted:

On one hand I'm fairly admirative of the results, but on the other the obnoxiously rational part of my brain says there is a hitch: in the real world, the patterns in a piece of glass don' t match those of the contiguous pieces.
