GIMP Version: 2.8.14 Operating System: Windows GIMP Experience: Basic Level Hi guys, I introduced myself a while back, I've only got around to ask a question now! I was wondering on some tips for turning photos into paintings in Gimp, I've made such things before but that was only by using outside programs like Vinci which is very good but sometimes drops the resolution and I've to transfer a photo back and forth from the phone to the laptop. Is there any tips or plugins that could help? Thanks.

There are a lot of painting filters, both in Gimp and in Gimp+G'mic. Personally I wrote one and I show here the results (Cicero pro domo sua) Original Attachment: treni025.jpg [ 102.16 KiB | Viewed 3808 times ] turned into an acrylic painting Attachment: treni025 (ACRYLIC).jpg [ 353.81 KiB | Viewed 3808 times ] turned into an aquarel painting Attachment: treni025 (AQUAREL).jpg [ 356.89 KiB | Viewed 3808 times ] (continues) |

You may actually find quite a few things in GMIC (a plugin) 'Painting' ![]() If you haven't got it, it goes well with gimp http://gmic.eu/ |

For dinasset-- Which filter did you use to create the first train (with smoke) image? I'd like to try all of them, but I'm not sure where they are! |

At the moment I can't help you, I've produced so many fake-painting filters during my Gimp life that I can't remember which one was that one. If you follow my activity on Gimpchat you'll see many more recent filters and see whether there is an effect you like. That one was very likely created at the time of Gimp 2.8. Maybe I can have a look backward into my old repository. |

OK, slsl60 ! Found, it's a filter of year 2016. If you are still interested (and you are a bit patient) I can try to adapt it to the last Windows/Gimp/Gmic versions. Let me know. |

OK, I've ported that filter to 2022, but I need a volunteer who does not use samj's package. Why? Because I run samj's package and in this environment the old layers modes (and other parameters old-style) are "tolerated", hence I'm not sure to have correctly updated all occurrences to the current style. |

PS: I sent the stuff to Mareroq, hoping he can perform the required test. |

Some GIMP/GEGL and G'MIC play (lots of presets; just wanted to have some fun). Now, if I were to cheat, I would also add some other things such as FotoSketcher, but just kept it to GIMP/G'MIC. Hope Diego don't mind me borrowing his train for my play. ![]()

@slsl60 MareroQ has kindly performed the test and the ported filter works. So I post it here for you and anybody else interested. The filter requires a few additions in the patterns set and in the Gimpressionist Preset. I post also those. the filter: Attachment: the patterns to be added: Attachment: the presets to be added (to Gimpressionist folder) Attachment: Enjoy. edit: GI preset were not attached, sorry |
