GIMP Version: 2.10.2
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

So I've been using Gimp for a long time and use it to make digital drawings and minor edits and such... When on 2.8 I used to zoom out and let the image recenter itself when I needed to look at the overall image but now in 2.10 that doesn't happen anymore :(
I have to center the image myself which annoys me because I'm so used to just zooming out with the mouse wheel and the image centering itself and not being off to the side or something.

Did they remove this feature or is it a bug?
... Or do I need to tweak something in my settings?

P.S. I operate Gimp in a full-screened, single-windowed mode.

Hi horse14t.
Welcome to Gimp Chat.

I'm still using Gimp 2.8 and will continue to do so,
until most of the bugs in 2.10 have been fixed.

This is probably a shot in the dark,
but have you tried using Gimp in "window mode",
to see it the centering feature works?

Back in Gimp 2.2 days, zooming out and the image remaining centered was treated as a bug and fixed. Edit: Although I see what you mean, zoom out far enough and the image centers.

Since then AFAIK the ctrl + rotate-scroll-wheel combination has always centered on the mouse cursor.

In Gimp 2.10.2 try this ctrl + center-mouse-key Most mouse will use the scroll wheel depressed as a key.

Click in the canvas, cursor becomes magnifying glass, drag to zoom-in / zoom-out Very quickly centers the image.

The difference from Gimp 2.8? ctrl + center-mouse-key pans the image.

A video demo.

Just tried it, doesn't work.

Took me a minute to get it. It works, a bit finicky and not what I'm used to but it works.
Still wish that I could just scroll the wheel instead of pressing it but it's better then nothing...

I also found that pressing Shift+J centers the image too (Weird shortcut but whatever).

I use 2.10.2 and it automatically goes to the centre but then I only change the size using the #v in the status bar.

Using the what in the Status Bar?... Also... what do you mean by Status Bar?

I also find this change from 2.8 to 2.10 an annoying time waster. Ctrl-J is also unsatifactory since at least in non-full-screen-mode, which I use, it shrinks the window down to "hug" the 100%-size image. There seems to be no key shortcut to go to 100%, center, and leave the window as-is.

Agreed man! It's annoying to take an automatic feature and suddenly make it manual with no option to make it automatic again.

Same thing with the lasso tool. I'm used to it completing the selection automatically but in 2.10 you now have to press Enter to complete the selection which throws off my brain something fierce!

Ctrl-Shift-J is what you are looking for, I think.

I know this is a really old post already, but for those who are just making the switch to GIMP 2.10.20, this is how to use the mouse wheel to zoom in / out and recenter the image at your cursor in GIMP:

1. Edit > Preferences > Input Devices > Input Controllers
2. Make sure "Main Mouse Wheel" is in list of Active Controllers, if not, select it in the left list and use the right arrow button to add it.
3. Double click on "Main Mouse Wheel" in list of Active Controllers
4. You will see a list of events. Click on "Scroll up (Ctrl)" and select "Edit Event".
5. Search for "zoom" and choose "Zoom In" (view-zoom-in), then press OK
6. Repeat steps 4-5 except now for Scroll Down (Zoom Out)
7. You may have to click "Clear Event" on anything that is conflicting with your new event, or on anything you don't want. EDIT: If you had previously set custom events in GIMP 2.8, you may have to also use "Clear Event" on them here, since now the event names have actually changed.
8. You can use this same process to set scroll wheel shortcuts for brush radius size, etc.
9. Credit to TanUv90 on YouTube for this technique :)
10. EDIT: To set your tool size or brush size with the scroll wheel, use the process above but search for "increase"/ "decrease" and apply "Tool's Size Increase by 10" to "Scroll Up" and "Tool's Size Increase by 1" to "Scroll Up (Shift)", and the opposite events to Scroll Down / Scroll Down (Shift). Of course, that is just my personal preference, you can apply any of the available increase / decrease events to any of the available mouse wheel actions. :)
