GIMP Version: 2.10.18
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Ubuntu 19.10
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

Hi,

I need some quick assistance. I've been searching the Web for 20 minutes, and can't come up with any results. I'm not sure how to describe what I want to do, so bear with me. I don't know the correct terminology or keywords to search for.

I want to select a layer by visible (foreground) pixels, as in, let's say I have a layer with some offending pixels that I do not want. Currently, I have to search through all the layers and toggle visibility to find out which layer that is.

Is there a faster way to select a layer by pixels? What would this feature be called?

Keep in mind that I am aware that the move tool can move layers based on which pixels have been hovered over, but I do not want to move layers, just select them, as if I have clicked on a layer in the Layers menu.

Thanks a lot for your help!

One way that I find stray pixels.
Is to use the Fuzzy Select Tool :fuzzsel and click somewhere within the layer,
on a "empty" space were there are no pixels.
Essentially selecting the alpha channel.
This should reveal any stray pixels,
by surrounding these pixels with a selection.

Then the Free Select Tool :freesel can be used,
to add these stray pixels to the selection and clear them.

This will work,
but when many layers are involved.
It would be advantageous to do this,
as layers are created to save time.

There is also what's know as Alpha To Selection.
Right-Click a layer within the layers dialog and the drop-down menu will open.
Select Alpha To Selection.
This will select most of what is within the alpha channel.
Some stray pixels may also be selected and also revealed.

Note: This is not to say,
that this is the only way of accomplishing this task.

Try Filters > Animation > Playback and use the 'Step' mode.
This will show you each layer. It may help to number your layers first.
