Operating System: Linux
OS Version: 20.04
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

I would like to create drawing as seen in the following images. I think that we need brushes to do that. It would be great if someone can help find appropriate brushes for the same. My main intention is to replicate normal real-life paint brush stroke. I am ok with single colour but would like to retain the texture. Thanks.

Just to clarify. In the end, I want to make brush strokes like this on letters and shapes. This crisp and sharp, if possible. Thanks

I took a piece from the last orange image, used color > mono mixer and saved it as .gbr. But when I tried it on a readymade letter, I got a very blurred result. Please see below

I made this brush stroke image using the "bristle" brush attached below.

What I did,
was to start with a base color.
Duplicate the layer.
The duplicate layer below,
is made a darker shade of the base color and moved slightly to show through the top layer.
I then marge these layers and use Distort > Curve Bend,
to get the shape of the brush stroke.
I also use the Smudge Tool to feather the ends of the brush stroke,
to complete the image.

I'm using Gimp 2.8.18 for this,
but it can also be done within the latest version.

Thanks @Wallace. When I tried, the brush gave a few dots. When I dragged it, it was a series of dots again. I am not sure what is going wrong. I am not able to replicate the crispness in the examples I posted. :(

Thankfully, I am able to create brushes out of the images I posted. But it is all black. Those brushes are not taking foreground colour like the brush you created. It would be nice to have a video on how to create a brush properly. Hopefully, after a few mistakes, I might end up doing the right thing. I will have help from here, so I feel a bit confident to try :)

Can someone evaluate this brush ? Finally, I got the brush I wanted, but sadly it is showing transparency, but all blend modes as 100 % opacity. Not sure where the transparency is coming.

Maybe reduce the spacing. I'm having a look at the other brush that you wanted evaluated.

Reduce the spacing to about 4 or 5

Update : The brush I created, I used spacing as 3 from 10. But it is still showing considerable transparency :(

Is there any method to fix it ? Thanks.

Edit : Transparency occurs when I save the brush as white. I inverted the colours and now it is working fine.

Update 2: Looks like the new brush I created has no problems and works well. I was originally trying to make a brush that can draw / paint like this

It will be really great if someone can help me make a brush for that or point towards an existing one.

Not exactly what I hoped for. But I got as close as possible with trial and error with Blister 03 brush :)

The PS examples you gave look great because of some clever macros employed by PS to give them shape.

You can still use PS .abr brushes, a nice oil-paint brush here https://www.deviantart.com/andantonius/ ... -597379459

but all you get in Gimp is the greyscale brush(s). That takes the FG colour but no extra effects.

For depth and shading bumpmap the painting. No easy way, experiment with making bumpmaps.

Edit: A quick way to get some shape if the gmic plugin is installed. In G'mic Lights & Shadows -> Illuminate 2D shape.

Thanks. I have not used brushes before. So I am having it difficult to understand the whole concept. I am not even sure why brushes act as stamps. I was hoping to have a brush flow of the particularly shaped bristles.

Thanks for the reference to G'MIC

Hope you saw my drawing. It would be nice to have a way to draw the same, but finer. It was made of Bristles 03 brush. Can we draw a finer brush using Inkscape ?

It is ok even if that is not possible. But considering how skilled you all are, I thought I will ask anyway :)
