GIMP Version: 2.8.14 Operating System: Windows GIMP Experience: Basic Level I am creating a book cover image for a new program called Vella that Amazon is creating. (Basically read a novel in installments on your iphone.) The book is about a monster with silver-rimmed green eyes. I have the green eyes, but everything I do to create the silver rims just comes out looking like a flat gray outline. Does anybody have (very!) specific instructions on how I might be able to do this? Much appreciated.

Hi; depends on how large an outline you want and the shape of the outline itself, curved or flat. I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but have posted a couple of quick mock ups below, a flatter one using a silver gradient and a curved one using a silver e-map with BRL.

I would love to know how to do that silver rim. The book is a sequel to the one below, but this time the bedmonster has green eyes, not blue, and they have a silver rim. I'm just going to put the eyes on the same background.

I've not done much rims or shiny, and it shows. This looks more like tinted glass than monster eye. Stroked path with light gray and used Alpha-to-Logo Chrome on it to create the rim. Bed monsters? Dio: Dream Evil. Attachment: rim-glass.png [ 81.64 KiB | Viewed 1932 times ] |

That's EXACTLY what I wanted. Can I use it? (p.s. BedMonster is a very loveable guy! Y'know, for a creature from the underworld'n all.) |

I did another mock up of a solution using your eye image. That eye is quite small and has jagged edges, which I have covered with the silver outline. Let me know if you want to take this further.

That's perfect! Can I use it? I'll post the Vella cover so you can see it. ( Below is what I've got and it's kinda bad.)

Yes of course you can use it. To help you out I have posted a zip file below that contains my xcf file, in which I created the above image. There is also a note on just what I did to get that result. In the xcf file both the left and right eyes are on separate layers with a transparent background, if you wish to adjust their position and/or use/place them individually in your image. Good luck.

Nice work. My sunglass-monster will creep back into the dark corners of its own library, to read King, Koontz, Poe and others till next autumn... |
