I haven't tried this yet. A script to build and install an AppImage for the latest GIMP version from Debian Unstable repository. The developer has made his own application manager which is needed to build an appimage. "App Manager for GNU/Linux that works like APT, PacMan or DNF: install/update/manage hundreds of standalone applications on multiple architectures, easily create your own custom script to download/install programs or to create a new AppImage from existing packages! " This could be interesting but I prefer to try-out stuff on a computer that I only use to try-out stuff ![]() |

I have tried that before with similar results. Kubuntu 20.04 The problem is that script pulls the packages from debian testing compiled with an upstream gcc different from the 'buntu 20 / mint 20 / ... installations. Not a fan of reddit but worth keeping an eye on https://www.reddit.com/r/AppImage/ A utility just been posted for making appimages. I will give it a try (but not today, too much to do) |

Hi rich2005 thanks for the information. I came across this and it's only 2 days old. It claims to make appimages from deb packages and it uses Ubuntu 20.04. Gimp is a pretty big app but I notice all the language files make it bigger. |

Thanks for the list vitforlinux. I don't think that last appimage maker could squash 4 deb packs into 1 appimage ![]() Are they all necessary, who knows? If anyone is interested here is a link to Gimp 2.10.30 deb packages from Rob Savoury. If you install all 4 debs you have a the latest version without using a PPA. Note the next long term support Ubuntu has Gimp 2.10.30 and its due later this year. |

I've been able to make a Gimp appimage with the Shradiko app. It works, it's transportable, but only to a system the same as the one it was made on. So to make a newer appimage you need a newer OS version. Then it would probably not work on older systems. I don't know if these issues can be resolved but the software is very new. This is the command I used: sudo ./shradiko-apt "$(pwd)/gimp_2.10.18-1_amd64.deb" gimp "$(pwd)/gimp.desktop" "$(pwd)/gimp.svg" "$(pwd)/Gimp.AppImage" Anyway, the first appimage I've ever made so kinda happy ![]() |

Gimp 2.10.18 - the base version for ubuntu 20.04 That is the problem of course, not Gimp 2.10.30 + it is a monster appimage. |

I upgraded this test machine to Ubuntu 22.04. That gives me Gimp 2.10.30 as the default Gimp version. I followed these steps to go from 20.04 to 22.04 I never realized the Ubuntu versions were actually dates ![]() |

Post subject: | Re: I am looking for Gimp 2.10.30 AppImage |
Long time since I made an appimage. Last one was Gimp 2.9 (between Gimp 2.8 and Gimp 2.10) Anyone willing to try this. Gimp 2.10.30 https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code ... JFLmCPkfrk zipped 160 MB It comes straight from Panda Jims 'buntu' focal packages so should be good for 'buntu 20.04 and Mint 20 As with the PPA version there is no python support but I have included support in the appimage. Unfortunately I am no where clever as Carmelo and his appimages so you need to install a system wide python2. sudo apt install python2.7 sudo apt install python-is-python2 Then there are 5 little .deb files in the zip. Put them in a folder, open a terminal in the folder and; sudo dpkg -i *.deb Just a note: It uses a regular Gimp user profile ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/ (not a dedicated appimage one) The usually guarantee. Absolutely None |

It will not work with 'buntu 18.04 but it does work with 'buntu 20.04 and 'buntu 21.10 I have tried them. You would not want to use this with 'buntu 22.04 where the default Gimp is already version 2.10.30 Where might you want to use it? Some options Not willing to use a PPA and stuck with Gimp 2.10.18 in 'buntu 20.04 Need to run Gimp from a storage drive. --- From a practical point-of-view, I am with racer-x and use PPA for Gimp 2.10.30 with kubuntu 20.04 but I have a feeling that doronf2 (original post) is using either a Mint17 or 'buntu 18.04 and that will never get Gimp 2.10.30. I still use a kubutu 18.04 computer on a daily basis, using the Gimp 2.10.22 appimage. It is a very productive installation. |

Quote: Linux Distro need update for security, also in version, why use ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04 after April 21? Well, I have some tools in kubuntu 18.04 that are not easy to get running in kubuntu 20.04 As I said, it is a very productive installation. End-of-life 18.04 LTS is 2023-04 still a year off. 20.04 LTS end-of-life is 2025-04 The usual advice for new 'buntu releases, wait six months for 22.04.1 to arrive. Let other people do the bug hunting ![]() Quote: When Gimp 3 are default on distro (22.10?) need working AppImage for update (step by step) old scripts. I know you are mostly pushing script-fu but I really need python, for the plugins I mostly use. Wonder who is going to rewrite those for Gimp 3 ? |

I made a Gimp appimage for Ubuntu 22.04. This Ubuntu version is to be released in April. What I did - extracted an Ubuntu appimage maker that uses 20.04 and edited the sources entry to point to 22.04. Then I repacked it. UNPACK ./shradiko-apt --appimage-extract REPACK ./appimagetool-x86_64.AppImage ./squashfs-root/ Then I used it to turn the latest Gimp deb into an appimage. ![]() |

Well... I am not too proud of this version. It is 2.8.22 made in a 'buntu 18.04 VM and I use it in 'buntu 20.04 I do not think it will work in anything later due to library incompatibilities. I am on another forum and sometimes get questions for Gimp 2.8 This is basically the gimp.appimage folder before running AppImageAssistant to pack it into the executable. That executable never worked 100% for me. It works but does not find the User profile, and starts with no brushes / plugins / scripts etc. I am not able to fix that. https://i.imgur.com/RKp6M6m.jpg So I just use the pre-packed folder (1 - see above) , run AppRun.sh (2) in the squashfs-root root folder and then go through Edit -> Preferences -> Folders in turn and add the path to the various default locations. https://i.imgur.com/ktkdRgw.jpg For some reason this insists on a usr profile (media) in my home directory. I like to keep the portable on a storage drive so as a work-around a symlink, (3) from home, to this User Profile in the Gimp 2.8 folder. (4) https://i.imgur.com/EmLQwOW.jpg Like I said it is a mess. ..but it is only 40 MB zipped so here it is: https://filedn.com/lkb9dw6mEfXSsOu9uKLaM14/gimp2822.zip |

The appimage I made on Ubuntu 22.04 also works on Ubuntu 20.04. It gets user filters from /.config/GIMP/2.10/. Hardly any python plugins work but some scheme plugins still work and the old FXFoundry still works. ![]() |
