GIMP Version: 2.8.14 Operating System: Mac OS GIMP Experience: New User I'd love to take an image I have and explode it into broken glass shards. I'm not seeing any great tutorials on how do this - any help would be great. |

That's a pretty cool effect, though I'm hoping more for something like the attached. But with my main image reflecting partially on each of the shards.

You could try G'MIC's break - relief. move the sliders till you get what you want, then add a small motion blur (zoom) EDIT: Another thing you could try, is get a creative commons picture of broken glass and play with the layer modes and your image |

sallyanne wrote: Another thing you could try, is get a creative commons picture of broken glass and play with the layer modes and your image This is a good approach. 1) I selected the black in the glass background to delete the space in the image. 2) Put the image layer on top, then play with blending modes. I used overlay.

Also PhotoShop tutorials can be mostly done in Gimp. |

Here is one I did - First I found a shattered image and turned it into a brush.
then (1) open your image and (2) duplicate it, (3) On the original image (background) run the breaks filter from GMIC in relief not flat (4) Using the shatter brush, select your top layer, (5) erase different sizes. After you have finished that put it in split mode |

Using your 'shards' image I opened the shards then an image as a layer and used darken layer mode, I got this
Or another way would be to invert the colours of your shard layer and use the Luma Lighten only mode |

I made a rudimentary glass shards brush in Gimp that works more or less OK. Attachment: glass-shards-brush.png [ 188.1 KiB | Viewed 1212 times ] Attachment: glass2.jpg [ 389.95 KiB | Viewed 1212 times ] |

I did use the getty image as a map to displace the original Original with map in addition like that you can see what would be the part on the broken glass then I put the map on top as Hard light Optional a bit of zoom motion blur |
