GIMP Version: 2.8.2
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Lubuntu 12.10
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Morning/Afternoon/Evening ...
New user and having a problem with the single window setup.
All the windows line up and the bottom of each of them disappears ... e.g the brush, gradient and pattern windows lose the edit save etc buttons. I have tried changing screen resolution to resize, which with a lot of wrangling I can drag the bottom up, but as soon as I go to single window, the bottom of the windows all drop off the screen again. I change back to separate windows and I have to resize them all over again.

All I have managed to do now is have all the windows separate ( or is it called un docked?). I can't get the brush gradient and pattern windows all together below the layers/channels/paths/brush editor group window like they were when I first opened gimp.

Is there a tut or something that can point me in the right direction to set up the workspace? I prefer the single window option as that is what I am used to (I use Paintshop Pro on my desktop)

TIA :pengy :tyspin

If you type in setting up single window mode in Gimp 2.8 in Google, there are lots of links there. Here is one but there are more.

Does this happen when you maximize the window?

Molly - thank you - one site I hadn't found yet, but I will be hunting tuts and sites like this one for a while until I get the feel of this thing :)

OdinBC ...
everything I have done has caused the window to drop out of screen range, minimised then maximised, resized, shut down, reopened, very frustrating. At the moment, I'm using all the windows rather than single so I can at least see the bottom of the windows. I've managed to get the panel back together at least. I really want to learn this as Paintshop Pro has headed in directions that I don't like and as there's no way I can afford Photoshop, I really want a program that meets my needs. (not that I'm a artist, but I like to tinker :) )

This sounds as though it may be a problem with your xorg setup, not GIMP itself. Perhaps your X11 viewport is larger than the screen size.

What is the output of running the following command:
grep Modes /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(You may not have an xorg.conf file on your system, which would complicate things, but it is not in itself problematic.)

I get
grep: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory

Does this behavior occur with other programs? What happens to your screen display if you press CTRL+ALT+<+> (this should cycle through the available screen resolutions)?

Check your display configuration (using Lxrandr) and look for anything that might be amiss (e.g., set for 2 monitors when you only have one, set for 1600x1200 when your display is at 1200x800, ...).

I'm using ubuntu, and find I have to minimise then maximise Gimp to get it to fit full screen mode and not cut the bottom off, the only thing that might be different in my set up to yours is that I removed the common window header as I just found it really annoying

This link explains how to do it. Link

saulgoode -
checked all of this yesterday, nothing out of the ordinary with resolutions, screens etc. This behaviour only happened in Gimp.... now I said happened, because this morning in fact just 30 minutes or so ago, I fired up gimp, and all is as it should be ... windows fit the screen, nothing hanging out of sight. All I kept doing was resizing, going between separate and single mode, changing resolution up and down ... then I gave up and was playing in separate mode only ... go figure ... so what I fixed, I have no idea, what was broken I have no idea. Computers ... gotta love em ... :pengy
