Hiya....My pattern files are associated with another program that open /.pat files so some do not work. Do I have to change this so the Gimp opens these files? Thanks

The Windows file association should not adversely affect GIMP's usage of proper .pat files. The file association determines what program should be used to open the file if you double-click on its icon in Explorer; so if you double-click on a GIMP pattern file, Windows might try to open it with Corel Draw (or whatever program has been associated with the .pat extension). Corel Draw will, of course, be unable to open the GIMP pattern, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Regardless of file association, you should be able to open any GIMP .pat from within GIMP (using "File->Open"), and GIMP should have no problem loading GIMP .pat files and adding them to its list of available patterns.

If you have some patterns that "do not work" then perhaps they are not actually GIMP patterns, but merely files that have the .pat extension. If you feel you have a GIMP .pat file that is not working, please provide some more information about it; ideally, uploading the file so that we might examine it.

Thank you....you have answered my question, greatly appreciated :)

I have quite a few that don't open which I have got through the internet. Just need to work out how to adapt these. Thanks again.

The .pat extention also is used by Photoshop. There was a plugin that detected photoshop .pat files and allows you to use them in the GIMP too. Maybe that might be your issue. Below's the plugin link; several folk compiled it for various platforms. :)

This one should work for gimp-2.8 Deb. :) Place it in your plug-ins folder.

The way to load Photoshop Patterns is to drag them into gimps image window. They will open in layers.
