Windows message: GNU Image Manipulation Program has stopped working

Hi,

I have a machine with an AMD A10-5700 APU, 4 GB of RAM and Windows 7, 64 bit. Normal GIMP works fine.

Recently I tried Partha's GIMP 2.8.6 and today I tried 2.8.10. Both don't even start. The details of the crash are:

2.8.6:
  Problem Event Name:    BEX64
  Application Name:    Gimp-2.8.exe
  Application Version:    2.8.6.0
  Application Timestamp:    51d58180
  Fault Module Name:    StackHash_1dc2
  Fault Module Version:    0.0.0.0
  Fault Module Timestamp:    00000000
  Exception Offset:    0000000000000000
  Exception Code:    c0000005
  Exception Data:    0000000000000008
  OS Version:    6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
  Locale ID:    3081

2.8.10
  Problem Event Name:    BEX64
  Application Name:    gimp-bin.exe
  Application Version:    2.8.10.0
  Application Timestamp:    52a0c32b
  Fault Module Name:    StackHash_1dc2
  Fault Module Version:    0.0.0.0
  Fault Module Timestamp:    00000000
  Exception Offset:    0000000000000000
  Exception Code:    c0000005
  Exception Data:    0000000000000008
  OS Version:    6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
  Locale ID:    3081

So just a plain old crash. Does anyone run Partha's GIMP on an AMD processor? What else could be wrong for the program to not even start?

Any help is welcome.

From what I understand, Parthas versions are all good and come with very good recommendations. I use Linux but the windows people here will get you on the right track.

Just a suggestion...

I have both Gimp 2.6.11 (full install) and the 2.8 Partha Portable (on removable storage) and they work nicely. Although I probably have a different graphics card then you do, but my machine is much less capable then yours is.

I'm no "Gimpologist" or anything like that, but have you tried the "Portable Partha" build, To see if it would run on your machine?

Or even try an earlier version, like maybe one of the 2.6 versions?

I do believe that 2.6.10, or 2.6.11 (which is what I use) are said to be some of the most stable versions of Gimp to date. (don't quote me on this)

Out of curiosity what is your graphics card, is the driver up-to-date?

I tried Partha 2.8.6 portable, it crashed just the same.

Aha, the clue is, there is no graphics card. It's an AMD Fusion chip, so processor and GPU sit on the same chip, AMD call this APU. The graphic is equivalent to a Radeon HD 7660D. And yes, the drivers are up-to-date.

That's odd... :?

Never head of this... :?

I can almost bet that this may be the issue, but this is only speculation on my part.

My question about the graphics card was based on the Windows error message. On chip graphics (not a card) is probably not the reason, but graphics still might be.

Can you start Gimp --verbose and post the terminal output?

I don't think Gimp uses the graphics card directly... at worst it could be compiled with options to use some "exotic" instruction set (such as SSE3) not supported yet on AMD processors (there are such options in GIMP's makefiles).

OTOH code c0000005 is about illegal memory access (I.e. referencing a memory address that doesn't exist).

Hmmm... I have no clue.

mine was crashing regularly and from the crash logs it seems that some of the scripts are not compatible. Using mavericks...I've decided to give it a break for a while and now using Simones version from sourceforge/Lisanet

In the meantime I had contact with Partha himself. We looked at the log file in
C:\Users\user\Appdata\Local\Temp\__gimp-2.8-run.log.

GIMP doesn't even start. Here is part of the log:
Started Gimp on Tue Jan 14 00:21:31 2014

I tried posting the entire log here, but I got told:
Your post looks too spamy for a new user, please remove off-site URLs.
Something wrong with the forum software. So I cut out parts of the log to get at least something posted.

Shouldn't you be starting verbose like this?
cd c:/Program Files/Gimp-2.8-Partha/bin/
gimp-2.8.exe --verbose

Indeed I did (after setting the PATH) correctly.

As I said, it doesn't start. It just crashes.

Have you added GIMPS bin folder to your environment variables?
GIMP will never start unless it can find it's Dynamic Libraries.

This should be something like the line below added to your system PATH variable string.
;c:\Program Files\Gimp-2.8-Partha\bin

Yes, the PATH was set correctly. If DLLs are missing, you get an error. Once I fixed all the "DLL missing" errors by getting the PATH correct, Partha's GIMP tried to start and crashed.

As I said, I referred it back to Partha himself, let's see what he tells us. I thinks it's best to wait for his reply.

for sure I am not going to upgrade to Mavericks. Partha's McGimp works perfectly in my Mountain Lion so I will keep it.
