GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Fedora 20
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
Fresh install

List any ERROR messages you received:
gimp

(gimp:2082): GLib-ERROR **: gmem.c:110: failed to allocate 16384 bytes

(script-fu:2091): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read(): error
Rilevato trace/breakpoint (core dumped)

Hi all,
I installed Fedora 20 in a new laptop (Lenovo ts430 with 8GB ram).
I'm trying to create a new image with a resolution 300 dots/inch and a dimension of 100x70 cm.
The resolution should be of 11812x8267 pixel

Gimp 2.8.10 says that the new images will be 910,1 MB. After I press Ok, Gimp crashes with a core dump. The message in the shell is

(gimp:2082): GLib-ERROR **: gmem.c:110: failed to allocate 16384 bytes

(script-fu:2091): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read(): error
Rilevato trace/breakpoint (core dumped)

With my old PC (Fedora 14) with only 4GB of ram, the gimp 2.6.11 says that the image size will be 11811x8268 with a dimension of 868 MB.
The image is created, and gimp works well.
I can't understand how to solve the problem.

There is someone with the same problem?
Bye
Ambrogio

32 or 64-bit Fedora?

No problem for me (Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit). Gimp gobbles up 1.2GB but everything is fine.

What is you tile cache set to in the Preferences?

I had this exact error in Fedora 19. See here...
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9417

I tried lots of things to fix the problem, including a "complete" (system folders included) wipe and re-install of GIMP, all to no avail. I was also having issues with Firefox and in my case, I determined there was corruption in Fedora 19 and a complete re-install was in order. F20 was just released, so I went ahead and dumped Fedora 19 for a fresh Fedora 20 install. After that, my problems went away (knock wood). I hope it doesn't come to the point with you where you have to reinstall F20. You could install another copy of F20 in a VM and test to see if it works on a clean, updated install. That would rule out corruption issues.

I do believe there are memory management issues in GIMP 2.8.x, but my evidence is anecdotal.
