Try using the sinus filter (Filters->Render->Pattern->Sinus) with random seeds on a few layers set to difference blend mode, then New from visible, threshold and blur.

This makes a nice bump map:

Wow, Rob, that makes a beautiful patterned glass style. Back, again, to my drawing board. Thanks!

BTW, a friend asked me to make the glass. I'm learning a lot in the process. I intend to send a link to this thread to her so she can see what all went on. :gimp

Tried your method, RobA. I still need to work with the bump map plus need to work with the bump map filter to get the light part whiter but I think it will work. I'm having too much fun at this I think.

I cropped it a lot. Just wanted to show small areas.

@O,
Did you try the plasti-wrap filter? I used it to make the ice-type shiny reflections on my avatar.

There is great need for a sarcasm font.
Absolutely for sure. We need to get those fontographers on the ball there.

No, never thought of the plasti-wrap filter. More drawing board stuff. Thanks, Bob. :bigthup

I'm sticking with Maze pattern in Render. If you like this result, I'll explain how I did it. If not, no worries...

Bob: I've been working on the Sarcasm font, for real. I am now on the letter K.

O,
I guess it depends on the exact look you & your friend are trying to achieve. The window in my bathroom actually has a plastic layer that is etched in a very fine diamond pattern; although you cannot see in or out, at night when the moon shines in (bathroom, moon, get it? :rofl ) the moon looks sort of like if you had used a camera with an extreme star filter.

This attempt started with a 512x512p white square. I ran maze then oilify, then GMIC cubism and GMIC spread noise, and ended with colorize.

In this one, I cheated, using a glass texture from CG Textures (link = http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?i ... 4d52b3cea8 )

This is the same glass texture, but I bump mapped it twice, once inverted, again not inverted:

On one hand I'm fairly admirative of the results, but on the other the obnoxiously rational part of my brain says there is a hitch: in the real world, the patterns in a piece of glass don' t match those of the contiguous pieces.

I totally agree, and had come to think along the same lines. I was proposing (in my mind) to make individual selections on a window pattern, and run different variations and directions of glass textures. Most of my own stained glass work consists of 50 or more types of glass and textures.

LOL ... well my friend saw the blue glass I put in the window frame and she will use that.

I love your stained glass mahvin. Looks beautiful even if the pattern is contiguous.

This is certainly a fun effect to play around with. No two results are the same ...

I'm pretty sure I didn't dream this. Someone put up a link to this and I downloaded it plus another piece of glass. The post is gone now or I had a hallucination.

@ Mike: That's gorgeous!

Whew! I'm so relieved. I clicked the link and saw the texture and must have connected it with a post instead of seeing it on the website.

:cool
