Gimp will not complete opening certain image files, such as the attached image. Why? Gimp works fine for other files, and this file opens fine with Windows Photo Viewer. It starts to open, but then just sits there with an Opening message until I kill it in Windows Task Manager, which shows metadata.exe (labeled as a gimp plugin, but presumably part of of the base Gimp installation, as I have not installed any other plugins) using about 17% of the CPU.

If it turns out these files somehow got corrupted, is there any way to correct them (other than just taking a screenshot) seeing as how they can still be opened in other viewers?

Thanks!

Ofnut, that is the Exif not where the file came from.
BTW, did the file open in Gimp for you?

Plenty of native Gimp functionality comes in plug-ins.

Given that the plugin that fails is called Metadata.exe and that you have some pretty outlandish Exif values (exposure time!), ripping the Exif before loading the image in Gimp could be worth a try. This said your image loads OK in my Gimp 2.8.2 Linux, and from that same metadata it finds the image is rotated and asks me if it should rotate it. Does it go that far for you?

On Windows, try to start Gimp using an additional --verbose parameter this will make Gimp start a secondary console window in which metadata.exe could be trying to tell you something.

Update: tried it with another image+Exif viewer... the exposure time is only one second. For ExifTool it's 1889 (seconds...), in agreement with the output of my Firefox exif plugin above (and the file name...).

Also since it's a 300D, its firmware would date back to the birth of the Exif format, so a sliogt deviation with the standard is possible, and ripping the Exif is even more a possible solution.

You can also file a bug at bugzilla.gnome.org and attach the file.

The Exif says the file comes from a Canon 300D camera... given the age of the camera and the file size, it looks like a direct camera output.

Yes, my Gimp can open the file.
