I have found some planet ring images from nasa and i put one of them here. So you can see what i must to do...

Use RobA's SampleGradientAlongPath script to using a path that crosses the ring, then use the gradient in a radial blend. You can then apply scale/perspective transforms to the result.

Very good Ella Louise, I did the second one on that link a couple years ago and it worked well.

If you want to make it look real "real" do it in Blender.

In gimp you can only do a guesswork on proper shadows and reflections.
Depending on position of the Sun/star your planet must cast a shadow on the rings and vise versa.
And it's even more complicated with lighting because the ring brightness and reflection will also depend on the vintage point.

There are two option in Blender
1. make a ring plane and UV-map NASA photographs or self-made images. There are also the gaps between the rings, so for the see-through
use mask (you have to make it) in Composite node editor
2. make the rings with Blender particle system

But I guess I should have started with a question: is your Blender project an animation or a still image?

I have recently found a script by 'James Sambrook' that does planet rings. You still have to do the shadows etc by yourself. I still have to learn that. And there are a few settings as well.
Can't remember where I got it but it is compatible with gimp.

That is a great way to do rings with the paths and gradient ofnuts!
