Try exporting your png instead of saving. You can save an XCF, but not anything else.
Saving vs exporting in Gimp

This change was made when Gimp-2.8 came out

'Could not save image' is actually a message from the file-png module... Hard to tell the cause, but normally some other errors (like directory/file not writable) have their own message. This message will most likely occur when the back-end library gets confused while writing to the file. Is the disk close to full?

Can you try the menu option: Image/Mode/Assign Color Profile and select RGB Workspace, click Assign, then try saving?

If that doesn't work, you could try: Image/Mode/Covert Color Profile, select RGB Workspace and click Convert.

I've ran into problems with PNGs that wouldn't save because there was an issue with their color profile.

Did that correct the problem and allow you to save?
