GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 7
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
none

List any ERROR messages you received:
Menu > Mode > "Indexed..." option is disabled (grayed out)

and, from animated Gif exporter:
"Cannot save RGB color images. Convert to indexed color or grayscale first"

i wanted to export an XCF to animated gif.

The export process said that I must convert the image to Indexed mode, first.

(huh? but the documentation clearly writes:
Quote:
There is no need to convert an image to a specific mode before saving it in your favorite format, as GIMP is smart enough to properly export the image

It's written here, http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tutorial-q ... -mode.html at the bottom of the page.)

So I tried to convert the image the "Indexed", and the option is disabled.
I double checked with Image > Color Space: RGB.

What went wrong?
(beside using a development version, of course ;))

Indexed mode does not support layer groups. If you eliminate your layer groups, you will be able to convert.

yes, i saw that later in this website.

it feels to me as a bug - since export process was supposed to work around all that (or at least create a temp image and remove groups there as a step towards export an indexed image.

I cannot tell how you want to convert you various groups to frames in the animation...

I have a flatten-groups script to flatten the groups in an image, down from some level (so your first-level groups can be flattened to plain layers to be frames in an animation).
