GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Linux Lite 2.0
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

List any ERROR messages you received:
The user manual is not installed locally.

Hello,
I downloaded the gimp help files using Synaptic -
gimp-help-common
gimp-help-en-gb
When using edit>preferences>help system
It reads "use the online version"
"The user manual is not installed locally".
Trying this just to make sure, I get the message "Manual is not installed locally".

What changes do I need to make please so the help manual is available offline ?

Hello SysTemX,

I have tried this and it give this error -

"The GIMP user manual is not installed on your computer.
You may either install the additional help package or change your preferences to use the online version"

Synaptic shows the help manual files are installed.

On your image where it reads - "There's a local installation of the user manual"

I have a red triangle and it reads - "The user manual is not installed locally"
Here are the screenshots of Synaptic showing help installed, and Gimp showing help not installed -

A couple of things to try.

Image

change from system and specify the language.

Go into /usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/ and change the folder name en_GB to plain en

:bigthup Thank You rich2005 :)
The first one solved my error, change from system and specify the language.

Your link may be interesting for a window user, but not at all for a Linux user. We have no such thing like xxx.exe.

You can get the source code from gimp.org
http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/help/ ... .2.tar.bz2
not that it will be much use to you.

If they do not compile themselves then Linux users generally get it from their disto repositories, as show in previous bitsnpcs screenshot.

As a preference, I do not install gimp help, much prefer this up-to-date English pdf which is indexed and searchable http://gimp.linux.it/www/meta/gimp-en.pdf

In Linux is no link necessary, the Gimp Help is in the repository. Just try it with
sudo apt-get install gimp-help-en-gb gimp-help-common gimp-plugin-registry

The last command installs all those important plug-ins in one go.

@Arran, will that code work in Fedora? We use the yum install, so would we just type in yum install ?

Probably yes. Try it, in the best case it works, otherwise nothing will happen; in any case, you can destroy nothing.

Sorry, I can't remember, I did not like Fedora at all. You have to find the programs with the certainly available «Choose your programmes to install»-Function, so if you search for Gimp-Help you'd be bound to find it in the repos. This application is much too important for the OpenSource world, so none of the great Distros can afford not to have Gimp with all possibilities aboard.

In Fedora..

yum install gimp-help

Then, direct GIMP to use the local copy as SysX describes.

Thanks a lot pengy Cleaver slayer.

I did the yum install, I closed and opened Gimp, went to gimp > help > user manual and this is what I get. I also went to preferences and checked user manual.
Image

When I click on one of the options, I get what looks to be scripts.

You have it opening the raw HTML in gedit. I'm using the GIMP Help Browser. You can also choose to use your System Web browser to open and parse the help (HTML) files.

If you don't already have it, you need to install the GIMP help browser.

yum install gimp-help-browser
