1.darken the background
you can use COLOR>CURVE (down)
2. text white
just put the Foregrand color WHITE before to write

:ninja by Marcello, but I'm posting my stuff anyway. :cool

Here are a couple ways you can experiment with. Maybe others will come up with more methods.

First way, open your image. Write your white text, add a new layer and fill it with black. Put the black layer between the text and the image and lower the opacity of the black layer until it reaches the level you want it. See animation.

Or, go to Colors > Brightness-Contrast and lower the brightness.

It is sometimes sufficient just to add a Drop Shadow with offsets of zero.

Alternately, one could add an outline by duplicating the text layer, inverting the color of the original layer, and then running "Filters->Distorts->Value Propagate::More Opaque" on the original layer.

That is cool. I had to try it. There are so many nice things in Gimp Chat and I keep hearing about more. Thanks saulgoode.

I have always just alpha to selection on the text, then create a new layer under the original text layer, select>grow and bucket fill with the other color. I have never tried Saulgoode's method, I must try it next time!

I always did it that way too, but this way the main text doesn't get changed in size nor does it get any distortion; only the backing text gets changed - non-destruction on the original.
